The Story Of My Baptism
Romina Fimbres Block B
On August 12, 2000 I was baptized, just 5 months after I was born. It was a hot, humid, and sunny day according to my parents. Surrounded by my lovely family, I received the sacrament and was cleansed from original sin.
Story Behind My Name
My mom was the one who wanted her first daughter to be called "Romina." The story behind my name began when my mom was around five years old, and her sister Romina was born. My mom always wanted a sister, and that day came true on October 3, 1975. As their time together was not as one may call so long. The few years my mom spent with her sister were worth more than gold. The time came when my mom was very young and her sister had passed away at the age of two from an accident. As my mom told me, "There was no need for more time because, I learned to value every moment as if it were the last." My mom promised herself, that if she ever had a daughter her name would be, "Romina." That is how my name was chosen.
White Garment
The Outfit I wore on the day of my Baptism was bought by my grandmother Lupita. My garment was also worn previously by my older brother and later was passed down to my little sister. The outfit was made from a table cloth my grandmother bought in Venice in one of her trips to Europe. They took it to a seamstress where it was made into a dress that had angeles and flowers embroidered with a lace around the top of the dress.
My Parents and Godparents
José Fimbres and Sandra, are my godparents chosen by my parents. José is first cousin of my father since both of their fathers are brothers. Although José is a little younger than my dad they have always looked out for each other in rough and good times. We all stay in touch constantly since their children are our age. We have gone to trips out of the country together such as Europe, and other family occasions. My parents also baptized one of their youngest child and that brings us all closer together as a whole. Not only does it make me happy we are all family and get along, but they've helped me expand my spiritual growth. Being their for me on my communion and confirmation and constantly talking about how I've been doing. Being an active role in both my spiritual and personal life.
Family Members
The day of my baptism my parents told me I was surrounded by many of my close family members. All my family from my mother's side that live in Mexicali the capital of Baja California. On the other hand my family from my dad's side cam from Tijuana México were I live today. The most important members that attended that I sadly didn't meet and remember were my both great grandmother's. Although my cousins, aunts, uncles, both grandmother, and both grandparents attended the ceremony as well.
Invitation
As I was interviewing my mom she told me, "I have the invitation from your baptism, that I saved for you to see one day." The invitation said the ceremony would take place in the Saint Augustine Chapel on the 12th of August at 2:30 p.m. I was really glad one day I could see the memories saved from my baptism. The invitation invited everyone to attend a party after the mass in the cottage at the Coronado Hotel.
Grandmother Lupita
Father Sanders
The priest that celebrated the ceremony was named Father Sanders, who sadly past away some years ago. My father met Father Sanders when he roamed the halls at Saint Augustine High School in his teenage years. They were really close friends and decided to call him because, he wanted him to have the honor of baptizing her daughter. My mom also agreed with my dad since he knew him and stayed in touched.
Passage
Luke 3:21, 22
"Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased."
I would chose this passage for a child being baptized because, it's a calling from God when the heavens opened. It explains how pleased God is with Jesus for encouraging people being baptized. It also includes a dove which symbolizes peace and hope. Which a baby being baptized has a journey ahead of them and in the ceremony they are cleansed for a new beginning.
