WEbster Nation,

A WEEK AWAY
Last week, 43 fifth graders and 12 chaperones embarked on the 6.5-hour journey into the Yosemite Valley. Once there, beneath the awe-inspiring granite gods, we hiked, learned, played games, sang, danced, swam in the rivers, developed new skills and mindsets, saw bears, feasted, sat beneath waterfalls, shared, supported each other, laughed, and had the best adventure ever! It was truly the trip of a lifetime. We are so lucky to have both Astrocamp and Yosemite as integral parts of our outdoor education program. These trips are an essential part of the elementary experience.
I know the Astrocamp team would agree that chaperoning these trips is incredibly challenging. It's 6am to 10pm on the best day. There are tired feet, homesick tears, missing flashlights, and midnight fears. Our chaperones are care-givers, lending hands, herders, motivators, and so much more. I'd like to take a moment to thank the incredible Yosemite crew for their Herculean efforts during the trip. Nora Cohen, Sara Epstein, Saono Jackson, Maryam Behzadi, Jamie Luteman, Damon Skelton, Rory McWhinnie, Elchin Sadigov, Gabe Sokoloff, and our educators Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. London...thank you is simply not enough. You made the trip more than special for us all.
"This was the best week of my entire life." - Luke
Well said, my friend...well said.
LUNCH WITH THE PRINCIPAL
I had the honor of dining with Jog-A-Thon fundraising winner, dog lover, and bacon enthusiast, Izzy Ifft, this week. One of the things she won for her efforts was the chance to grab a friend and have lunch with the principal (not totally sure how that's a prize?). Either way, she brought Scarlett Jackson and the three of us had a delicious meal at Howdy's and then bounced over to Bu-Yo for some ice cream. These two were great lunch companions and super fun to hang out with this week.
MUFFINS WITH MOMMIES
TK hosted a lovely event to honor our Moms (including Mrs. Kym and Ms. Neci). With Mrs. Kym's help and her special recipe, we baked 40+ healthy banana muffins. The recipe included lots of counting, stirring, and measuring. We also wrote poems, painted colorful self portraits of us holding hands, crafted sweet jeweled sculptures, thumbprinted necklaces, and sang and danced to, "I love my Mommy..." and "Chicka Boom Boom Mommy!" We even snuggled up in our Mom's arms to watch the Magic Movie "I love my Mom because..." It was a beautiful community-building event filled with smiles, tears, and lots of love! We recognize motherhood is found in many forms.. and most importantly they all express love! xoxo -TK.
FEELING THE LOVE
The week started with a delicious spread of bagels and coffee. From there, the staff was treated to flowers and massages. Students dressed up in their teacher's favorite colors. We had a beautiful lunch provided by Mendocino Farms and then Friday rolled around and the "refreshment cart" came rolling along with it. We also received goodie bags and movie buckets!! We definitely felt the love from our community this week and feel blessed to serve in a school where gratitude is shared so authentically. A huge hug to Vicky Farrell for taking such good care of our staff this week and organizing the events.
What rhymes with lime, and sometimes flies? Thyme!
5th Grade Buddies had a blast giving their TK Buddies clues about mystery herbs in the garden yesterday! Students were blindfolded and given the challenge of identifying mystery herbs by utilizing their senses, as well as prior knowledge and experiences from gardening classes this year. When stumped, the 5th Grade Buddies would provide clever clues to help. Students took great pride in being able to accurately identify the herbs. Afterwards, TK and 5th Buddies harvested some of the vegetables, and enjoyed the fruits of their labor together. Class ended with an impromptu game of “Hide and Seek” between some of the Buddies, and fun was had by all! All the garden groups were treated to this experience this week with the amazing Ms. Justine!!
2nd and 3rd Graders Hike Topanga
On Tuesday, the 2nd and 3rd graders spent the morning at Topanga Canyon State Park. Docents guided us on a nature hike where we observed the plants, animals, and natural features of the park. Our docents shared their vast knowledge of the local flora and fauna. We learned about plant and animal life cycles, natural resources used by the Native Americans, fire recovery, conservation, and this incredible state park that's right in our neighborhood. This is always a favorite field trip as it connects to many 2nd and 3rd grade social studies and science topics. A huge thank you to all the parents who rallied to support our teachers and students on the adventure.

STANDARDIZED TESTING ISN'T THE KEY
See, it's not just me. This is more than just a trend, it's an awakening. The world continues to change and evolve while education, in general, remains stuck in the "but we've always done it that way" cycle. Here at Webster, we will dedicate ourselves to having conversations about the implications of new information, new technologies, and new ideas that are shaping the future. We want to remain agile in our approach and evolve in order to meet the needs of our students.

Developing character and growth mindsets is invaluable and will be a major focus of ours here at Webster over the years. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity and kindness. In addition, we will notice and value it in each other.
