El infinitivo
more than just a verb list....
Use infinitives to describe a noun, yes, a noun > EL + infinitivo..
When we want to refer to an activity, ie: reading is fun or speaking Spanish is difficult, and the activity is the subject, the infinitive (with the definite article) is preferred over the "ing" form that we use in English.
EL hablar en español es difícil, pero el leer es más interesante. (Speaking in Spanish is difficult, but reading is more interesting)
¡El Fumar es malo para la salud! (smoking is bad for your health!)

Use al + infinitivo to express upon doing a certain action...
Fácil niños... un formulario! In order to say "upon arriving" "upon seeing", "upon whatever-ing" :) use the contraction al + infinitivo. done.
Use the infinitive after prepositions, again replacing our "ing"!
Use the infinitive when you want to express actions that follow a prepositon, like:
Me lavo las manos antes DE comer (I wash my hands before eating)
El cuchillo es para cortar el pan (the knife is for cutting bread)
No salgas de la casa sin ponerte la chaqueta, hace frío! (Don't leave the house without putting on your jacket, it's cold!)
Una nota con la contracción AL: puedes usar al + infinitivo para expresar "upon doing something"...ejemplos siguen:
<al llegar a mi casa siempre voy a la cocina para una merienda>
<el profesor anunció una prueba de sorpresa al entrar los estudiantes>
<al abrir los regalos, los niños se volvieron muy emocionados>

Always use the infinitive after your first conjugated verb to complete your idea!

Did you know that you can use the infinitive as a substitute for the IMPERATIVE??? It is very common in 'impersonal' expressions for the command format, ie: recipes, in public settings... miren... no fumar... añadir sal y pimienta... etc.
