The Weekly Update
Springfield Twp MS - Season 6, Episode 19 - Jan 13
From the Principals
At STMS, we take pride in our ability to create spaces and activities that meet the diverse needs and interests of our student community. In an effort to expand our offerings for our students, we are pleased to announce the addition of a program called “Maturing to Manhood.” To bring this program to our school community, we have partnered with our Voices of Excellence Club, which has fostered a culture of inclusivity and unity at our high school for the past several years, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., which is a historically black fraternity that supports our community through service. This program will be supervised by Mr. Quyntyn Gaston, a teacher here at STMS, and attended by a high school VOE student-leader. The content of the program and the guest speakers will be provided by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. The program will occur during our advisory period about once per six-day cycle. The Maturing to Manhood program aims to bring African-American male guest speakers including leaders, academics, artists, and athletes to our school to provide mentorship and guidance to our students through discussion and personal reflection. The program is crafted to support our African-American male students in 7th and 8th grade, and to that end, we will invite all students who identify as such. However, as an inclusive school community, we will not limit this program if we have other students from different ethnic groups who would like to participate and are in 7th and 8th grade. A formal interest meeting will take place on February 7, 2023, during our Advisory time. If you have any additional questions, you wish to opt your African-American male student out of the interest meeting, please feel free to contact Mr. Jason Pane, assistant principal, at jason_pane@sdst.org. Thank you for your continued support of our school community and students as we continue to partner with local resources to build additional programming and support at STMS.
Mock Teen Bedroom
As part of the School District of Springfield Township's partnership with Be Part of the Conversation, we are pleased to present "Mock Teen Bedroom" and "Parenting on Your Feet" at the Middle School Library on Wednesday, February 8th, 2023 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. This in-person event will provide families with information on identifying drug and alcohol use in teenagers and the trends that put kids at risk for substance abuse. Pre-registration is required at conv.zone/sdst. We hope to see you there!
Gun Violence and Safety Information
As a district, we want to recognize the tragedy that occurred on Monday, January 9th, 2023 in Newport News, Virginia, when a 6-year-old student brought a loaded handgun to school and shot his teacher. This event and the news coverage that has followed creates an opportunity for family discussions around gun safety and mental health awareness. Please take a moment to view this important resource which contains information about talking to your child about gun violence and other frightening news, resources for reporting safe schools information, home gun safety reminders, and preventative mental health information. If you or your child are in need of additional support, please reach out to your child's school counselor or social worker.
