Safety and Security at GJPS
A Message from Board of Education President Beryl Piccolantonio
June 17, 2022
Dear parents, teachers and staff,
This week, Governor DeWine signed House Bill 99, which allows teachers to carry firearms during the school day with only 24 hours of training if permitted by a District’s local Board of Education.
We have received communication from many in the community who are concerned about this legislation and we want to make sure you know that the decision about whether or not to permit staff to carry firearms is a board decision. Currently, our board of education does not permit staff to carry firearms and there are no plans to discuss a change. Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools strives to provide a safe environment where students and staff can learn and work free from fear and violence.
More information about the measures we are taking to address safety and security in our school buildings can be found on a School Safety and Mental Health page of our GJPS website.
Sincerely,
Beryl Piccolantonio
President
GJPS Board of Education
