His father states "What he does have is a competition problem. He was born with that ... the person he tries to outdo most of the time is himself."Growing up in Wilmington, North Carolina, he liked to play basketball more than spend time on academics. He would always play with his brothers, and they would beat him every time, but he knew that one day he would become a basketball legend.
In high school, he was cut from the team during sophomore year, but this drove him to be more determined and dedicated towards the sport he loved. He improved very rapidly and won a scholarship to to the University of North Carolina. Michael soon became a very important member of the colleges team, he helped them win the NCAA Division 1 championship in 1982 by scoring the final basket needed to beat Georgetown University.
