Are you originally from the Golden Triangle area? Yes I am originally from the Golden Triangle. Born and raised in Buna, Texas.
Tell us about your family/pets. My husband is a Beaumont firefighter. We have been married for five years and live in Lumberton. We have three children, Paisley (4), Alyssa (11), and Kaden (12). We have two dogs, Rudy & Viper. Our family loves spending our free time just getting out of the house, either going to do things locally or trips out of town.
What did you aspire to be as a child? It changed a lot. I think the majority of my childhood I wanted to be a veterinarian or a writer. I asked for a typewriter when I was in the fourth grade and I just thought that was the coolest thing ever.
What was your first job? I worked in a video store and disability office in Buna starting at the age of 15. They were one in the same, believe it or not. At the end of my “career” there, I was manager of the video store and helping with writing appeals for denied disability claims. It was a really interesting experience.
What is your current occupation/setting? I am currently the SLP, Senior at HealthSouth Rehab Hospital of Beaumont. I work inpatient, but also complete outpatient FEES as well. I chair the Parkinson’s Committee and provide education for our disease specific programs: Stroke and Parkinson’s. I am currently working on my BCS-S and to be on HealthSouth’s national dysphagia team. In my spare time, I contract PRN with two home health therapy agencies and Skilled Nursing Facilities in the area.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I am completely addicted to Pinterest. So naturally I love shopping, decorating, and remodeling my house. I enjoy reading fiction, but my reading lately has been primarily speech rehab blogs and research articles related to speech pathology. I am also one of those strange people who love to attend CEU events on my weekends off.
What’s your favorite food and beverage? Cajun Chicken Pasta and an El Presidente’ from Chili’s.
What’s your favorite zoo animal? Tapir- most interesting animal I’ve ever seen at the zoo.
Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? At least two cups of coffee!
Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life? Sandra Bullock- the klutzy version.
Shine on Karen Whisenhunt Saar!
Are you originally from the Golden Triangle area? If not, where did you grow up? No. I'm from Southern Illinois originally. I pretty much grew up in Mesa, Arizona.
Tell us about your family/pets. I have two cats- Royal and Yorick. They are wonderfully different and great company. Growing up I was not at all a cat person. However, these two have really won me over!
What did you aspire to be as a child? I wanted to be a pet psychologist.
What was your first job? My first jobs were babysitting, mowing lawns, and decorating cakes. However my first job with a boss and a real paper paycheck was as a vacuum cleaner company telemarketer. That lasted less than a month. It was a terrible job for me!
What is your current occupation/setting? I am an SLP, instructor, and clinical supervisor in an outpatient university clinic.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Reading, riding my bike, playing board games, and brewing beer with friends.
What’s your favorite food and beverage? I could probably eat nachos every single day. I have tried and just can't give up coffee.
What’s your favorite zoo animal? Geoldi's marmoset
Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? Music
Shine on Taryn Light!
Are you originally from the Golden Triangle area? If not, where did you grow up? YES! I grew up in the tiny town of Evadale Texas! I moved to Warren Tx in High School. I graduated with my Master’s in San Antonio and although I am in love with that city I came back home as fast as I could.
Tell us about your family/pets. I am married to TJ Light who is a High School Football coach for Vidor ISD where I also work. Together we have two of the best kids in the world, Taylor Rae, 6 years old and Talen Vaughn 4. I am currently pregnant with our 3rd child (boy) and due at Christmas.
What did you aspire to be as a child? As a child I loved school and loved reading every book I could get my hand on. Headed to college I never knew exactly what I was going to do get a degree in but I always wanted to work at a school. My mother preached to me not to be a teacher but she thought the speech therapist had the easiest job on campus! Well that sounded great to me so I entered the speech therapy program at SFA. It was my second year into the program that I realized I would be required to get a Master’s Degree! I loved every minute of it so luckily I was ready to tackle that as well.
What was your first job? My first job was a hostess for Casa Ole in Silsbee. I stopped by there with a friend who applied for a waitress position and accidentally got the hostess position without really even wanting a job. Made me respect wait staff tremendously!
What is your current occupation/setting? I currently work full time at Vidor ISD as the SLP for Pine Forest Elementary. I supervise the secondary campuses as well with an amazing SLP assistant that makes my job pretty easy! I also have the best co workers and team of SLP’s anyone could ask for! I also work PRN for several different Home Health agencies and LTC facilities.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? If I have any spare time it is usually scheduled. I spend as much time with my husband and kids when he is home. I love traveling and seeing new places and of course our favorite place to travel is Disney World.
What’s your favorite food and beverage? Mexican food. Who doesn’t love Mexican food?? However, I must admit that living in San Antonio has really got me spoiled to the good stuff! Right now Lupe Tortilla and Pappasito’s top the list. The trick is the rice….if a place has good rice you know you are in the right place!
What’s your favorite zoo animal? I guess I would say the giraffes.
Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? Well since I am pregnant right now I would say I can’t go without breakfast but on nonpregnant days I could not go without my schedule. And I’m not talking about on my phone or anything electronic. I need a paper calendar to organize this crazy life of ours.
Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life? Always been a Jennifer Aniston fan. I think she could pull it off!
