News from Room 2A

September 18, 2016

Hello!

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful weekend that we are having! I was fortunate enough to see my college son yesterday and go to my first Big 10 Iowa football game. I am hoping that the Bears do better today than Iowa did yesterday!

What's New...

It was a busy week filled with language arts, math, and science activities along with fire drill practices, our first fire drill, and picture day. In language arts we have moved on from simply identifying characters in stories to learning how to pay attention to details that the author includes in text to figure out who a character really is. We are learning how to look at a character's moods, actions, and opinions to better understand the character. In the coming week when reading with your child at home, please talk about the characters in the stories. Specifically, focus in on character traits and the evidence/clues that the author gives to let the reader know about the character.

We have also read 17 Elephant and Piggie books thus far and are using these AWESOME books to list character traits of Gerald and Piggie. These first graders absolutely LOVE this series!

During our math time we wrapped up our unit on measuring with non-standard units and are now strengthening our number sense by counting, reading, and writing numbers to 120 and beyond. Finally, our focus in science this week was on how plants and animals are like others of the same species.

A Note about iPads...

  • This year, all Walden iPad users will be installing apps by using an app called Self Service. Apps that the students will be installing via Self Service have gone through a rigorous vetting process by District 109's technology department. The first graders know that they are only allowed to install apps that we install together in class. I wanted you to know this, as well, in case you see your child installing other apps or if your child asks you to install an app.
  • Please remember to send your child's iPad to school each day.

Upcoming Events

  • 10/3 - No School - Rosh Hashanah

Thank you!!!!

I've been spending time reading through all of the incredibly informative letters that were sent in about these wonderful first graders. Thank you for taking the time to write to me. If you haven't sent in a letter or email, yet, please consider doing so.
