Reading Round Up

This week we received our eagerly awaited second issue of Storyworks! (Thanks, again, PTA!) The main article is about the sinking of the Lusitania. We will continue working with this edition of Storyworks throughout the month, and students will once again be rewarded for keeping it until the end of the unit.

We started reading Obert Skye's novel Witherwood Reform School. So far, we have learned that Tobias and Charlotte Eggers have a horrible governess- a word which we discovered means "nanny". Stay tuned to see what happens next!

Writing Notes

This week the students continued to work on their magazine article. They are gradually moving through the writing process. This is a piece that the students are spending a lot of time to craft and perfect.

We will continue to work on our article next week. The students should be finishing this writing piece within the next couple of weeks. I am so excited to see their finished article. They have worked so hard on this.

Math in a Minute

Next week in math students will continue classifying triangles and quadrilaterals. We will also begin exploring how to find the volume of rectangular prisms. Some other upcoming topics include measurement conversions, graphing, and personal financial literacy. Students will have 1 homework assignment given out on Monday and due on Thursday.

From the Science Lab

We are working on Weather and Climate, and the Earth, Moon, and Sun. Encourage them to watch the weather report on the news each day, if possible, so they can start observing weather patterns!

Social Studies

This week we worked on raps about the Bill of Rights. We hope to have some downloaded and available for your listening pleasure by our next newsletter. There is so much great stuff happening in the world of Social Studies this year, Election years always provide us with tons of materials to teach our students about how our government works, and why it's important to be involved in the process.

Sock Hop!

5th Grade Sock hop will be held on Friday, February 12th from 1:45-3:00. This is the annual Spring party for 5th grade. Please remind your student that everyone goes to the sock hop, it's not a "dance" that you invite someone to.

The 4 optional activities associated with sock hop are:

  1. Making a poster about the sock hop to displayed in the hall. There will be a prize for the best poster. These are due to PTA by February 3rd.
  2. Wear a 50's costume to school on February 12th. Poodle skirts, "greasers", and nerds...whatever your preference, there will be plenty of friends in awesome outfits!
  3. Create a Valentine box- some people go all out- we even had a 3 foot pink poodle one year!
  4. Valentine Exchange- if you choose to bring in cards, please be sure to have one for each student in your homeroom class. Contact your homeroom teacher if you have not received a list.

If you want to help out, you may contact Kristen Allen at kjma2000@yahoo.com. you can also sign up on PTAvenue.
