December 2022

Board of Education Meeting: Monday, December 12

The next Board of Education Meeting will take place Monday, December 12 at a special time: 5:00 p.m. at the ABC Administration Building, 909 S. 76th St. All meeting materials will be posted on our website once available.

On November 6, 2022, our Board of Education approved our 2023-24 and 2024-25 District Calendars for Westside Community Schools. Please note, these were formed after several weeks of discussion and collaboration with a committee including staff members, parents, and administrators.

As you review, we want to share some of the key factors that played a role in our decisions to determine this calendar.

  • We need to have 175-176 days for students each school year in order to meet/exceed school year hour requirements as outlined by the Nebraska Department of Education.

  • We need to have 191 teacher contract days to stay in compliance with our negotiated agreement.

  • To better accommodate new student orientations and transitions each August, we prefer to start with a partial week as opposed to the first day of school being on a Monday.

  • This calendar allows us to have ample professional development and workdays throughout the school year for staff.

  • The parents and staff members on the calendar committee unanimously agreed on the following components of our calendars:

    • Be done with school by Memorial Day
    • Have a full two weeks (10 weekdays) off for Winter Break
    • Have the Wednesday of Thanksgiving Week off for students and staff
    • Have a full week of Spring Break

Thank you to our Calendar Committee for their help, and thank you to all of our hardworking staff for your time and dedication to our district.

2022 Holiday Sponsorship Opportunities

Because we have such an incredible community with generous hearts, we have been able to assign a sponsor to each student and sibling who were identified by our social workers for our Holiday Sponsorship efforts this year! Thank you!

However - because we have families in need all year long - there are still a number of ways you can help contribute to supporting our families now and throughout the year:

Purchase a gift card in any amount to WalMart or Hy-Vee. These contributions will allow our Social Workers to make sure our families have basic necessities and assist in getting perishable grocery items, not only for a holiday meal, but all year long. Gift cards can be dropped off any time - or mailed to: Westside Community Schools, 909 S. 76th Street, Omaha - 68114, ATTN: Molly or Kim.

Purchase socks and underwear for the Westside Clothing Closet (children and adult sizes). These clothing basics are needed all year long and your donations are greatly appreciated! Boys & Girls sizes and Mens & Womens sizes (small to 2XL) and socks of ALL sizes. These items can be dropped off any time at the ABC Building - 909 S. 76th Street.

Also, right now, the Clothing Closet could use donations of new / gently used winter coats and boots, as well as new hats and mittens and gloves.

MONETARY DONATIONS to the FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER (through the Westside Foundation)

Make a monetary donation through the Westside Foundation to the Westside Family Resource Center. On the Westside Foundation webpage - Westside Foundation - click on the red "DONATE TODAY" button and select the Family Support / Food Pantry under the drop-down menu. Our Social Workers assist families all year long and your donation will ensure help is available, whenever the need arises.

Put together a family household basket: Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Shampoo / Conditioner, Body Wash / Soap, Laundry Detergent, Dish Soap, new kitchen towels, Lysol Wipes, all-ages family games (like UNO, Pictionary, Blokus, Sequence, decks of cards, etc). Our social workers will distribute these to our high-need families and can be dropped off at the ABC Building - 909 S. 76th Street - December 13th through 16th - between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support for all of our families this holiday season!

2022 Angel Food Funds

This year, Westside Nutrition Services is helping assist families with children who have negative school lunch balances on their accounts. By donating through MySchoolBucks, our team will work to distribute these funds equally throughout our schools to cover those negative balances as we head into second semester.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity!

As a reminder, if you believe you may qualify for free/reduced meals for your student, it is imperative you fill out an application. This may also help your child qualify for other services and activities.

Each Wednesday, our dedicated staff members throughout our district will share their personal stories about why they choose Westside! We hope you will click below to watch our videos shared in November!

Thank you to these great folks for making all of this possible and for making our 75th Homecoming celebration year so special!

What is 'SEL', or Social-Emotional Learning?

In our continued effort to share what our students are learning in school, we want to provide additional resources for parents and families, hoping to reinforce those same lessons at home.

Our curricular definition of Social-Emotional Learning, or SEL, is helping students acquire the skills to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible choices. Our teachers, counselors and psychologists spend approximately 30 minutes, once a week, on SEL.

Click here for a recap of WHY we teach Social-Emotional Learning and the proven results.

We've also included below a few worksheets, specific to grade level, breaking down what students are learning at each age through SEL at Westside. If you have questions, or would like these resources in another language, please connect with your child's principal.

Westside High School to dedicate gym floor to longtime Superintendent Dr. Jim Tangdall

Westside Community Schools is excited to formally dedicate the floor of the Westside High School main gym to Dr. Jim Tangdall, longtime District 66 educator, coach and superintendent. The dedication will take place Saturday, December 10 at 3:00pm, immediately prior to the Westside Varsity Girls Basketball game versus Norfolk.

Dr. Tangdall spent his entire career with Westside Community Schools. He was a beloved teacher, coach and administrator. He served as Principal of Westside High School for 13 years and later retired as Superintendent of District 66. Many note he was most proud of his years teaching math, coaching basketball and implementing modular scheduling at Westside High School. To date, Westside is one of approximately 10 schools in the country to continue the modular scheduling system, allowing students to take more courses, have access to teachers throughout the school day, and become more exposed to independence and responsibility as learners and young adults.

“The name Jim Tangdall is synonymous with dedication to children and the success of public education,” said Dr. Mike Lucas, Superintendent of Westside Community Schools. “His impact is felt everywhere throughout our district and now every visitor who comes to our school will see his name and learn about the incredible things he did for District 66 and our community.”

Dr. Tangdall died in 2019. His family members continue to support Westside Community Schools through various projects and opportunities, and several will attend the dedication on December 10. All of Dr. Tangdall’s children and grandchildren graduated from Westside including Sara Tangdall, Alison Kemp, and Daniel Kemp, in addition to Grace Greenwald, who is currently a sophomore at Westside High.

“It was so important to my Dad that his grandchildren benefited from this amazing school district,” said Kris Greenwald, Tangdall’s daughter.

We are tentatively planning on the following schedule of events for Saturday, December 10:

  • Dedication of Jim Tangdall Court, 3:00pm

  • Westside Girls Varsity Basketball game versus Norfolk, 3:30pm

  • Westside Boys Varsity Basketball game versus Norfolk, 5:15pm

Behind The Calendar - DECEMBER

Our featured photo in our printed district calendar for December 2022 showcases Westside students Lucas Agulla (trumpet), Megan Oberle (bass), and Erin Lyle (baritone), who were selected for the 8th grade All-State Band & Jazz Band Concert in March 2022. Only 100 students were accepted out of 400 applicants; Westside Middle School, through the leadership of Band Teachers Tim Rischling and Keith Schoening and Orchestra Teacher Ken Meints, had THREE students selected! We are very proud of these student musicians, who are now freshman and performing in our award-winnings bands at Westside High school!
