Pre-AP English 10: Required Reading and Optional Reading with Extra Credit
Project
1. REQUIRED: Pre-AP 10 students are required to read two novels: Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and Warriors Don’t Cry: A Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock’s Central High by Melba Pattillo Beals.
2. Students should be prepared to test on both novels the first day of class.
OPTIONAL: Pre-AP 10 students may also read one of the following novels and complete the extra credit project on that novel. Projects should be turned in on the first day of class. Students will need to purchase a paper bag to complete the assignment.
Extra-Credit Project Novel Choices:
Fiction:
1. Anthem by Ayn Rand
2. 1984 by George Orwell
Non-fiction:
3. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
2. Rocket Boys: A Memoir by Homer Hickman
3. Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution by Ji-li Jang
Due Date: First day of class
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the selected novel and determine the main characters, setting, plot, and symbols.
WHAT TO DO: (*All components must be included.)
- Decorate the front of the bag:
o a scene from the novel
o the title of the novel
o the author’s name
o your name
- Decorate the back of the bag:
o the names of the main characters
o the names of the supporting characters
o information about the setting
o information about the plot
o information about two (2) symbols in the novel
- Inside the bag:
o five (5) objects that help tell the story
o two (2) symbolic objects
o three (3) objects that remind you of the 3 main characters.
o two (2) objects that relate to the author
GRADING CRITERIA:
Front 10 points
Back 10 points
Inside 20 points
Creativity 20 points
Presentation/Essay 40 points
