WE ARE SEEKING HOST FAMILIES!
We are seeking host families as we prepare to welcome middle school Italian students to Plymouth in November.
The middle school program is now open to both 7th and 8th grade students. The goal of the program is for students and families to engage in a one-to-one exchange model - to have the same families reciprocate hosting on each side. In Spring 2020, Plymouth students will have the opportunity to study in Milan.

Mass STEM Week
Massachusetts STEM Week is October 21-25. It is a statewide effort to boost the interest, awareness and ability for all learners to envision themselves in STEM education and employment opportunities, and compliment the formal instruction happening in the Commonwealth beyond STEM week (massstemweek.org).
During #MassSTEMWeek we will celebrate all things STEM in Plymouth including, but not limited to graduates working in STEM fields, STEM staff, and the various ways in which our students see themselves in STEM. Begin the celebration now by personalizing your own See Yourself in STEM poster and share it with us on social media.

Mrs Peterson's third grade class invited Mrs. Burke's kindergarten class in to listen to the third graders small moments story writing celebration!
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue
Mr. M’s class studied Christopher Columbus and his journey to the New World. They learned about the three ships he sailed on, The Nina, The Pinta, and The Santa Maria and they also discovered that Columbus didn’t actual land in the United States, but the Bahamas. We still celebrate this famous explorer for his discovery of the New World.
Writing Celebration in Grade 4
Students in Mrs. Manfredi's grade 4 classroom celebrated their Realistic Fiction stories during writer's workshop Friday. There was a quiet hum of reading while students shared stories with friends. A special guest was there to hear some of the stories, too!

Ziggy Kailher - The Therapy Dog
Ziggy Kailher of the Kailher family visits Indian Brook regularly to spend time with students. Jenith brings Ziggy to school when teachers request a visit. While Ziggy loves spending time with all the kids, he gets especially happy when he sees Owen or Liam (now at PSMS). A special thanks to Jenith, Daniel, Liam and Owen for making Ziggy such a special dog and for sharing him with Indian Brook.

Thank you Mr. Ingeno for coming in and teaching the second graders all about fire safety for Fire Safety Prevention week. The students got to try on fire gear, see pictures of firefighters putting out fires, and learn all about what they should do in case of a fire.

Third Grade Array Bakery
When the students came in to Ms. Lille’s room, they discovered that their classroom had been transformed into an Array Bakery! The pastry chefs worked with manipulatives and visuals of tasty treats to build their foundation for multiplication. Using arrays helps students visualize multiplication problems, learn to use strategies instead of relying on rote memorization, and see the commutative property in action. Bon Apetit!
Kindergarten Reads Their Favorite Books
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Walsh, Mrs. Hickey and Mrs. Willis' class had a "Storybook Readers Parade" that celebrates the end of their first unit where they make story books old favorites by reading the same stories over and over again.

Students Make Creative Sculptures
Students in Ms. Casselman’s art class have been working on sculptural lanterns for the Illuminate Festivities. Students are building the structures out of basket weaving wood, tape, and tissue paper. Once they are complete, students and families can walk with their lighted sculptures in a citywide procession on November 23rd.
Mercury Teachers Making Connections
On Thursday, October 17th, the Mercury teachers joined their students during lunch time to make connections with their current, former, and future students. Making positive connections with students outside of the classroom is one of the goals of our the Social Emotional Learning initiative.
OpenSciEd
There's a new way of thinking going on at PSMS. Science classes are utilizing a new science curriculum called OpenSciEd. OpenSciEd uses routines to lead students through an activity, starting with an anchoring phenomenon, followed by a driving question, going through multiple investigation routines, putting the pieces together, and finally, using the evidence to answer the driving question.
Teachers have found their students are much more engaged in class activities and that there are more conversations happening about science. Every student has their own lab book; they use the data in it to make and defend claims.
Students have become active participants in their learning; currently, 8th graders are studying gases, 7th graders are learning about heat transfer, and 6th graders are investigating properties of light.

Congratulations to PSHS's art student Cilla Beltran who was awarded "Best in Show" for her art submission to Plymouth Center for the Arts: 2019 Young and Art Show.
