Dear Beach Middle Families,

Thank you all for such an outstanding first week of school. Although the setting is different, the objectives remain. Our staff and students, along with their home support systems, absolutely shined. Even through the inevitable technology issues, everyone was patient and understanding. Although all of us want to be back in school as soon as it is safe, we are committed to making the virtual experience the absolute best that it can be. I think I can safely say we are all getting settled in.

I will send a weekly newsletter this year. I will share upcoming events and news, along with pertinent information and announcements. For this first issue, I am sending via AlertNow. However, from this point forward I will only send it through the My School Mail list serv. If you haven't yet signed up for My School Mail, I encourage you to do so. You may also sign up there for the daily AM announcements and more.

I am so excited to begin this year. We have the best community at the Beach and I can't wait to see how high our students can SOAR!

Tomorrow is our first Marvelous Monday! Mondays are reserved as teacher work days. Students should also use Mondays to help them prepare for the week. See below for suggestions of what your child can do to maximize their time. Students should also check Schoology pages as Teachers may upload asynchronous materials or assessments to help students review the previous week or prepare for the upcoming week.

What is the SEL Bell?

This virtual setting is new for all of us. Even though we experienced this in the spring, this current setting is so much different. One of the biggest missing pieces now is the face to face relationship building time. When we left in the spring, those strong bonds between teacher and student as well as students and their peers had already been established. We also recognize that this entire situation has been hard on everyone. The SEL bell is intended to help us start our day off on a positive note. It allows for time to get to know one another and get prepared for the day. For those of you familiar with the elementary morning meetings, it is very similar. I was able to get a glimpse of some of the meetings this past week. The teachers have worked hard to make it engaging and fun. I have no doubt it might become some student's favorite part of their day.

What is the Literacy/Numeracy Bell?

In order to provide our students with more time to develop their skills with literacy and numeracy, a 50 minute bell was created. The class is tied to each student's 2nd core class of the day. Students may not be required to log in live each day. We wanted to begin the year off by getting students comfortable with the schedule so we did require live meetings this past week. Beginning this week, the bell will be structured with more independent, self-paced activities. Each student's work during this bell will be different and tied to their own skill level. Teachers may use the time to create remediation and enrichment opportunities. They may also use it for benchmark assessments to help plan instruction. If your child needs to log in live during this time, they will be informed by their teacher.

I have included information about attendance from the Virtual Informational Session. We will treat attendance procedures as we always do. If your child has to miss class, please send an email to the teacher and copy our attendance secretary, Doctor's notes can be emailed/scanned to Ms. Wynn also. Please submit the information as soon as possible to assist us in keeping our records up to date.
