Principal's Corner

Dear Edison Families,

Summer has officially begun! We enjoyed our last few weeks of school, and feel so very fortunate to have such a great group of students to share our days with. The end of the year brought celebrations and good-byes, as we celebrated the accomplishments of our students and said good-bye to our 8th graders transitioning to high school. Included in our newsletter are the MANY students that received awards this school year. We have some amazing students at Edison!

As you continue through the summer, please make reading a priority. The extra practice at home is essential to maintain skills through the summer. Students also have access to Dreambox, an online math program where they can get extra practice in math. Students can access this program by logging into any Chrome browser and accessing Classlink.

Thank you for sharing your students with us this year! We hope you enjoy the summer and get outside to enjoy the sunshine. We look forward to seeing you in the Fall!

Edison's PTO

As we wrap up the school year, Edison PTO wants to welcome everyone who will be joining the Edison family next year - all of our future 6th grade families and any new 7th/8th grade families. We also have to say “good-bye” to the 8th grade students and families. Eighth graders, we wish you all the best as you begin your high school adventure. And to the many eighth grade families who have given your time volunteering at events, helped provide and set up meals for conferences, donated money, and participated and supported our fundraisers during your time at Edison…we are truly grateful for the contributions you’ve made to our PTO and school community! A special thank you and farewell to our out-going book fair coordinator, Samantha Wescott. Thank you, Sam, for all your time and hard work!

Thanks from the PTO for all your support!

Have a great summer! Go Cats!

Student of the Month

Music Notes

June Music Notes

Middle school singers and instrumentalists, the Edison music department wants to THANK YOU for spending your year with us in band, chorus and/or orchestra! We are SO glad you chose to be a part of our groups! 8th graders, we wish you well in high school. 6th and 7th graders, we look forward to working with you again next year!
Enjoy your summer!

We hope many of you 5th graders are signed up for BAND, CHORUS, and ORCHESTRA! These performance groups meet for one period every other day, during the school day. 5th graders can sign up for two of these groups in any combination: band/chorus, band/orchestra, or chorus/orchestra. If you sign up for one music group you will have Directed Studies on the opposite day. We hope you decide to participate in one or two of our music groups! Please contact any of the directors with questions. (Directors and their emails are listed below.)

If you wish to try chorus next year, it is not too late to sign up! Even if you were not in chorus as a 6th or 7th grader, you can try it for the first time next year! Contact Mrs. Weflen or Mrs. Sundvold if you have questions about chorus.

Each month the band, orchestra, and chorus areas will each recognize a 6th, 7th, and 8th grader that shows exceptional dedication, responsibility, and character each and every day.

Musicians of the month for MAY are:

Band: Mya Brooks (8) Brody Nour (7) Caroline Buttke (6)

Chorus: Kris Franks-Naylor (8) Jasaya Pinckney (7) Aiden Skarski (6)

Orchestra: Selah Seymour (8) Evelyn Akkerman (7) Jakob Bausch (6)

The Edison music department wishes to thank Lewis Drug for supporting our Musician of the Month program!

ORCHESTRA ALL STATE NEWS~ The middle school all state orchestra audition music for next year (auditions will be in Oct and Nov) is out! It can be found on the SDMEA website, www.sdmea.net.

Tryouts for next year’s All State Band are in November, but summer is the best time to start working on the music. You can find the music here: All State audition materials

Now is a great time of year to consider starting private lessons on your instrument/voice. Individual lessons with a skilled teacher are a great way to learn, grow, and excel as a musician. The private lesson list can be found on the Edison Music Dept. website at http://emsmusicdept.weebly.com/private-instructors-list.html

The Sioux Falls School District is always on the lookout for donations of gently-used band and orchestra instruments. Given our funding challenges, this is a great way to increase our instrument supply and allow more students to play in band and orchestra. Please contact Mrs. Sip or Mr. Jensen for more information.

The Edison Music Department has a website! Refer to this website for information and dates.

Edison Music Department has a Facebook page! This page will be used for informational purposes only. You can check concert dates, rehearsal dates, practicing tips, etc. on our page. We will NOT have any pictures of students posted, it will strictly be used for getting information out to you!

The page is: www.facebook.com/EMSMusicDept

There are other Edison schools out there so check before you “like” our site!

HAPPY SUMMER from the Edison Music Department!

News from the Counseling Office

Registration is now open for High School Summer School – check the link for classes and registration https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/page/summer-school

Current 8th graders should strongly consider taking High School CONNECTIONS class! It is designed to assist students in making a smooth transition to high school by providing connections with math, reading, and writing skills. The class incorporates a variety of activities which provide students with an opportunity to improve their academic skills, as well as to familiarize them with their new high school, expectations, procedures, opportunities available, and organizations/clubs/activities. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get a head start as they enter high school.

Students who successfully complete the class will earn .50 elective credit toward their total high school credits.

The course will include math and language arts units which will help prepare students for high school. See the counseling department for more information.

CTE Academy Information

For more information about CTE Academy please check out the website! There are several courses available to freshman second semester. https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/o/ctea
