Overview of Teaching & Learning
Programming is the process of selecting and sequencing learning experiences which enable students to engage with syllabus outcomes and develop subject specific skills and knowledge. The process of programming is typically shared and offers an opportunity for collaboration, professional reflection and evaluation.
Programs:
- reflect the needs, interests and abilities of students
- are based on syllabus outcomes and include a variety of teaching, learning and embedded assessment activities, strategies and resources to address the learning needs of all students
- are flexible and dynamic documents that change in response to student learning needs, school context, teacher evaluation and feedback
English
- Year 3 will be undertaking a unit of work 'Celebrating Books'. This unit celebrates the wonder of books and in doing so, aims to encourage a love of reading in the students. Students will participate in explicit reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling lessons linked to this unit of work.
- Students will continue to focus on developing their decoding skills in Reading during Reading Groups with a specific focus on building fluency, predicting, monitoring and questioning. They will also build on their comprehension skills of locating information and the main idea of a text as we prepare for NAPLAN.
- Persuasive texts will be the primary focus for writing as the students prepare for NAPLAN. Students will build their understanding of purpose, audience and language by drafting, proofreading and editing persuasive texts. They will be encouraged to explain and reflect on how they structure their writing to achieve intended purposes.
- In Speaking and Listening students will be supported to express their opinion through impromptu speeches.
Mathematics
- This term Year 3 will focus on addition and subtraction, patterns and algebra, data, length, two-dimensional space and three-dimensional space.
- Students are required to count, order, read and record numbers of up to five digits. They will use informal and formal mental and written strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Students will record, describe and complete number patterns and determine missing numbers in number sentences. They will estimate, measure, compare, convert and record length, area, and volume using formal units. Students will name, describe and sketch particular three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional shapes.
Science & Technology
- This term, Year 3 students will research and investigate the lifecycles of sunflowers and their dependant ecosystems. They will examine the needs of living and non-living things. Students will examine relationships between plants and animals through various food chains and investigate the role of environment through soil and local school yard ecosystem surveys.
HSIE (History & Geography)
- During Term 1, Year 3 students will participate in a history unit of work titled 'Community and Remembrance'. Students will be asked to identify celebrations and commemorations of significance in Australia and the world. They will describe the origin of these celebrations, including those of the major world religions.
Creative Arts
- In Visual Arts, students will make artworks linked to the topics of Celebrations and Living World, focusing on the use of detail through line and colour. Students will discuss their choices used to best represent the qualities of the subject matter.
- In music with Mrs French, students will be revising the School Song and the National Anthem as well as investigating the concepts of rhythm, beat and pitch.
Personal Development, Health, Physical Education
In Term One PDH, students will participate in the Friendology program. It will teach students to develop healthy friendships and manage conflict in a positive way. As part of this unit, students will explore the following Key Inquiry Questions:
Who is the real me?
How do I make friends?
How can I be a great friend?
How do I put out friendship fires?
Students are expected to participate in 150 minutes of physical activity each week. In Term 1 the focus will be to adapt known skills in a variety of physical activity contexts. This includes the weekly Be Skilled Be Fit (BSBF) lessons for one hour, PSSA or House Sport as well as time with the classroom teacher.
- BSBF is held every Monday and House Sport or PSSA is every Friday. Students should wear their sport uniform on these days. Please remember to bring a hat and a drink bottle on these days.
Library

This term the library program will focus on introducing students to the fiction and non-fiction areas of the library. Students will be shown how to select suitable books and how to shelve properly. Students will also be encouraged to commence the Premier’s Reading Challenge, which finishes at the end of August. Students will also be refining their skills in accessing and exploring the features of Oliver library. To link with their Persuasive writing unit, they will be writing a Book Review on a library book and publishing it to the Oliver library system.
