What's on tap for 2015-16 Community Read season
Three books by Kentucky authors have been selected for the 2015-16 season of Community Read, and plans for a fourth event are underway.
The first Community Read book for 2015-16 will be “Somebody I Used to Know” by David Bell, an award-winning author who teaches in the English department at Western Kentucky University. He will speak briefly about his writing, participate in the discussion and be available to sign books from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8.
Be a founder of the Friends' endowment
The Friends of the Library is building an endowment to provide another layer of financial support to the Calloway County Public Library’s programs and activities.
The Friends board approved in July the creation of the endowment through the Murray-Calloway County Community Foundation, Inc. And Friends’ President Ann Landini wasted no time in kick-starting it by donating the first $2,500, which the community foundation matched.
Any individual or couple who donates $250 before Dec. 31, 2015, will be listed as an endowment “founder.” And the Friends of the Library will have endowment donation forms and more information available at the Sept. 13 annual meeting.
Our Mission: A message from the president
As the Friends of the Calloway County Public Library begins its second year, we will continue to engage in activities that support our mission statement. We will advocate for quality library services for all the people of Calloway County, support the library through fundraising, and enhance public awareness of the library and its services.

Q&A with Circulation Manager Liz Hammonds
You see these people busily tending to business at the library whether it’s reshelving books or helping patrons check out. But who’s the person behind the name tag and smile?
Each issue, we will spotlight one of the librarians at the Calloway County Public Library.
We start with Liz Hammonds, circulation manager. Hammonds, a Murray native, received her first library card at age 7 from the Calloway County Public Library. She is a graduate of Murray State University with undergraduate and graduate degrees in English literature. When she’s not working at the library, you might see her in productions at Playhouse in the Park.

Membership renewal change
The Friends’ board decided to designate the annual meeting each September as the cutoff point for paying dues and renewing memberships instead of requiring each member to pay on the anniversary of joining Friends of the Library.
Each member must pay dues in September after being a part of the group for at least a year. So those who joined Friends of the Library after Sept. 30, 2014, will be up for renewal in September 2016 and each September after that. The grace period for paying renewal dues extends through December of each year before membership is cancelled.
