MAP Testing Next Week
Make sure students get a good restful sleep the night before the test and have a good breakfast. Try to be here on the day of testing and avoid appointments on testing days.
Child Safety (Erin's Law)
Public Act 96-1524, also known as Erin’s Law was adopted by the state of Illinois. This law requires all schools in the state of Illinois to adopt and implement a program addressing the prevention of child sexual abuse through age appropriate curriculum for all students from Pre-k through 12th grade.
Early childhood through 5th grade will use an extension of the Second Step lessons to fulfill this mandate starting next week. The Second Step Child Protection Unit is a multi-layered approach to protect children and keep them safe from abuse. The presentations include age-appropriate lessons on safety, not keeping secrets, and appropriate vs. inappropriate touching.
Topics include:
● Ways to Stay Safe
● The Always Ask First Rule
● Safe Touch, Unsafe Touch
● Practicing ways to stay safe
● Safe and Unsafe Secrets
● The Touching Rule (A person should never touch your private body parts except to keep you healthy)
● 3 Steps to Safety (Say “No”, Get Away, and Tell an Adult)
● Identifying and learning to tell safe, trusted adults
● When someone breaks the safety rule, it is not the child’s fault
Unfortunately, child sexual abuse is a problem in our society. Studies show that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be the victim of some type of sexual abuse by the time they reach age 18. Millburn Elementary School wants your child to have the knowledge and skills to use if (s)he is ever affected by sexual violence. The prevention education program is designed to empower and educate children.
If you have any questions about the content of the program, please feel free to contact one of our social workers, Kristen Bethancourt (EC-1st) or Liz Boron (2nd-5th.) Together we can make sure our children have the right to be safe, and know where to go if they are not.
Please find content information on the lessons in this week's Virtual Backpack. They will give you a better understanding of the lessons and what will be discussed.
If you wish to opt your child out of these lessons, please contact your child's teacher.

Celebrating the Earth the Month of May
Earth Month is coming courtesy of the Ecology and Garden Club
Millburn Elementary members will be celebrating the Earth during the month of
May. Each day will bring awareness of our surroundings and how we interact with
it. Ecology Club Members will help to bring you resources. We can have fun and
focus on a theme during this warmer time of year. Perhaps we may learn a thing or
two. Each Friday we will let you know the following week's activities.
May 6-Light Saving Day
Students can tally all the ways they conserved light energy on this Monday.
May 7-Take a Walk in the Outdoors
Students can see the earth waking up with spring blooms on trees etc. by taking a short
walk about our many areas outside – perhaps a loop around the school building perimeter.
May 8- Wear “Earth” soil Color day (tan, brown, ochre, yellow, red brown)
Students choose a shirt or other clothing piece to show earth pride
May 9- No Paper Day Challenge
Students see how few pieces of paper they can use to accomplish tasks on this day
May 10- Recycled Craft Art Day
Students create small 2D or 3D art using reclaimed bits for cutting, gluing, and shaping into
small sculptures or pictures.
