Dear Families:

We are so proud of our PKE students and their learning. Learning is happening at each grade level. Students continue to learn from one another as we assemble as a school for "Leader in Me" presentations. This February, we will focus on Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw:

taking care of yourself by staying healthy and energized; finding meaningful ways to help others.


The winter months are very important to academic growth. Please make sure your child is getting to bed on time, reading every day and completing their homework. These are often the months we see your child's reading, writing and math skills "take-off!"


Expectations are higher for every grade level student. Every student is expected to become more responsible and encouraged to take risks in their learning; striving to go one step beyond what they think they can do.

Calling all 2016-2017 Kindergartners!

If your child turns five (5) years old on or before September 1, 2016 (or as late as December 1 with a signed waiver), he/she is eligible to attend Kindergarten in 2016-2017.


In the Fall of 2016, Clarkston Community Schools will continue to offer two options for parents of Kindergartners:


  • Kindergarten - Full-day Kindergarten is offered at every elementary school.
  • Young Fives Kindergarten - Young Fives Kindergarten is available for students that turn five years old between June 1 - December 1, 2016. Young Fives Kindergarten is a full-day program offered at the Early Childhood Center and Independence Elementary. Students that attend Young Fives go to their home school the following year for regular Kindergarten.

The end of our first semester of the 2015-16 school year signals an opportunity to celebrate your child's learning. Our Instructional Services Team looks forward to sharing the story of your child's learning journey with you and your family.


On Wednesday, February 10th, your child will bring home his/her first Learning Feedback Document (LFD). Along with this, you will receive information on the LFD and the Gradebook/Parent Vue. As we move forward, future LFDs will be available through ParentVue, our on-line Student Information System. Printed copies will be available through the main offices of each building.

STUDENT INFORMATION SYSTEM - ParentVue

The ParentVue portal is an important part of our Student Information System. In this portal parents can view their child’s attendance, transportation information, academic progress, and update important student information like phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc. As we continue to work toward paperless communications, please plan to use ParentVue regularly.


It is important that you take the time to set up and activate your account if you have not already done so. You will need an activation key to do this. Here’s how:


1. Email SynergySupport@clarkston.k12.mi.us to request an activation key. Provide the following information in your email:

  • Your Name

  • Your Student(s) Name

  • Your Student(s) Date Of Birth

  • Your Home Address

  • Your Phone Number



Also, please make sure to take some time to review the information in ParentVue and make sure that we have the most accurate and updated information, particularly phone numbers and emergency contacts. To access ParentVue (once you have activated your account):


  1. Go to the Clarkston Schools’ webpage www.clarkston.k12.mi.us

  2. Choose the Resources tab and then select ParentVue

2015 National Blue Ribbon School-wide Celebration

Thank you to U.S. Congressman Mike Bishop and Michigan Representative Jim Tedder for visiting our school, speaking at our celebration and presenting our school with an honorable recognition.


A special thanks to Karen Kumon, Lisa Drew and our National Blue Ribbon Committee who not only completed the application but also orchestrated our beautiful celebration. Our staff, students, PKE families and the entire community are just AMAZING!

Outstanding Optimist Citizen of the Month...Chloe Krawczak

Each year, the Clarkston Optimist Club recognizes one student from each school building that exhibits the characteristics mentioned in the Optimist Creed. The student and their family are recognized by the teacher, principal and the club and given a plaque and treated to breakfast.


On January 27, Chloe was recognized for this award by Mrs. Mertz, 5th grade teacher and Mrs. Yeloushan at the Optimist breakfast. Congratulations!

Check out the snowboard design progress...

One of our 4th grade classes is designing a snowboard in art for Olympic snowboarder Barrett Christy. Mr. Fugate, a father in Mrs. Kumon's class brought the idea to Mrs. Sebring-Schneider. The students have researched patterns and interviewed the Olympian during a webcast back in December. We are hoping for to present the board in February to Barrett.

Mark Your Calendar - Maker Girl Mania!

Maker Girl Mania will be on Saturday, April 16 @ the High School. Maker Girl Mania is a day where girls from Kindergarten through 7th grade come together and become artists, coders, inventors, makers and builders.

PTA NEWS...

We have some fun events coming up in the next few months that I'm really excited about. Movie Night is February 26! Bring your blanket or sleeping bag and join us in the cafeteria for the movie "SNOOPY" and popcorn.


Our all-school event COSI: The Incredible Human Machine is scheduled for March 3. This is a fantastic, all day event for our students and we will need LOTS of volunteers during the morning and afternoon to make it great for our kids. Details and volunteer sign-up information will be coming soon.


Thank you to the many volunteers who made BINGO NIGHT in January a big success!
