Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 26, Issue 12, October 23, 2018
From the PFC President
Aloha! Forgive me, but as I write this, my family and I have just returned from a week on the Big Island. Fun Hawaii Fact: As Hawaii is three hours behind the U.S. West Coast, the first Sunday NFL games start at 7am. across the islands. This means that if you watch three games in a row, you can get all your football viewing done by about 5pm. And this still leaves you enough time to clean up around your home before the awesome, daily sunset over the Pacific takes place.
Keeping your home clean can be one of those necessary chores. And as Thornhill is home to our kids for a good piece of every school day, it is good to know that so many Thornhill family members came out to help make that home look as good as possible at the Fall Sweep last Saturday. It was a true team effort, and we should all give thanks and appreciation to Elyse Bart and the Sustainability Team members who ran the cleanup.
The calendar at the bottom of this newsletter has important dates to remember...One of which is the next PFC Board meeting, which will be Monday, November 5, from 6-7pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
A reminder… all newsletter submissions are due on Thursdays by 3pm.
Mahalo,
Rex Crum

Book Swap and Donation Drive
Reading is one of life's great joys but managing stacks of outgrown volumes is no fun. Has your student outgrown Eric Carle? Long to take a dip into Harry Potter territory? Want to clean off the shelves and maybe stock a few new favorites? Bring your GENTLY used volumes to the Walkathon. We will be collecting donations and trading books.
In addition, we will be accepting new and used donations to the Thornhill Library. Please check out the latest wish list for ideas. Any books not picked up by Thornhill students will be donated to the East Bay Book Project.
Questions? Contact Becky Urbano at vpsupport@thornhillschool.org.

Thank You From the Sustainability Team!
To all Thornhill families who have emptied out their closets and donated items, a HUGE thank you! The sustainability team has received over 500 goody toy items and a few rounds of silverware. We will be re-purposing your goody bag contributions during the Walkathon for lap prizes and the silverware (supplemented by a Goodwill silverware splurge) will go to the Dads Club BBQ.
The bins will remain in the lobby through the end of this week (10/26); if you'd still like to donate, we'd still like to accept what you've got! Here's to a little less plastic in the world.

Fuel Up for Our Fourth Graders
Thornhill’s fourth grade class is holding a big bake sale/fundraiser at the school Walkathon on Saturday, November 3. All of the money we raise will help offset costs of the class’ annual field trip to the Coloma Outdoor Discovery School. This overnight field trip in California's Gold Country is an incredible and fun learning experience, but costs have gone up this year, and we want to keep it as affordable as possible for everyone.
We will have a ton of baked goodies for sale, so please make sure to stop by (cash only please) to fuel up before the Walkathon, buy snacks in between laps, and take some home for Sunday morning treats. We’ll be selling cookies, muffins, cakes and bread by the slice and in small batches, and we may also have for sale a few whole cakes and/or pies.
