2nd Semester

Our focus this semester is research, poetry and Shakespeare. Students will thoroughly analyze and decipher different types of poetry and poetic devices. We are currently studying Langston Hughes and other pioneers of the Harlem Renaissance era.

Common Core Standards for this semester:

RI.6.1: use evidence from the text to support my analysis of what the text says and inferences

RI.6.2: describe how a story’s plot unfolds using a series of episodes; explain how the characters respond or change as the plot advances.

RI.6.4: determine the figurative, connotative, or technical meaning of words or phrases in a grade 6 text.

RI.6.5: analyze how a sentence/chapter fits into the structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas

L.6.4a; use context clues to figure out word meanings.

L.6.5a: interpret figures of speech in context.


RL.6.2: determine the theme and explain how it is portrayed through details;summarize a text and leave out my personal opinion

RL.6.3: describe how a story’s plot unfolds using a series of episodes; explain how the characters respond or change as the plot advances.

RI.6.6:determine the author’s point of view and explain how it is conveyed through the text
