A Note From Nurse Misti
Message from Leander ISD Health Services Department:
LISD Health Services is aware of and monitoring developments around the outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. Based on current information, the CDC has stated “that the immediate health risk from 2019-nCoV to the general American public is considered low at this time.” Although the risk is considered low at this time, campus nurses will continue to work with campus administration to help remind students and staff of everyday actions they can take to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses.
Here are some friendly reminders to help stay virus-free this season:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds
• If soap and water is not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your cough
• Wash your hands after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
• Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, and objects such as toys and doorknobs
• Stay at home while you are sick.
• Call and inform the Campus Nurse of any confirmed virus diagnosis.
LISD follows the Texas Department of Health Guidelines for illness-related exclusions from school. A student will be sent home if they have a fever of 100.0 Fahrenheit or higher, or any other contagious symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) and will need to remain home until symptom free for twenty-four (24) hours, without the use of medications.
Health Services will continue to monitor and communicate with the Texas Health Department on any new information. As well as continue to update and work with LISD custodial services to maintain a clean learning environment for our students and staff.
Thank you,
Misti Yeager

Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on Journey Parkway-We need your help!
From Leander PD-How it works:
The signal light will be "dark" or no signal lights activated and drivers can continue through. When prompted by a pedestrian/crossing guard wanting to cross, the signal light will start flashing yellow-warning drivers to use caution. The signal light will go to a solid yellow letting drivers know that a red light is next so prepare to stop. Once the red light is on, it will be a steady red meaning all traffic has to stop and stay stopped. A short time later the red lights will begin to flash which tells drivers they can proceed AFTER they have first stopped and if their crosswalk is clear of pedestrians/crossing guards.
Please spread the word and help us keep our Aviators and Crossing Guards safe each day! Thank you for your support!

PTA's Kids First
Kids First Is Coming to 2nd Grade on Friday, February 28 from 8:00 - 10:35
Kids First is an inclusion program created by Texas PTA that gives students a chance to experience what it is like to live with various learning differences such as Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, Speech Impairment, Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment & Mobility Impairment. The program contains hands-on stations that provide kids with real life examples of the challenges that some kids face. By building a culture of understanding and acceptance we are encouraging inclusion and diversity here at Akin.
Kids First will be offered to second grade this year on February 28th. Please think about volunteering to help at one of the stations, even if you don't have a 2nd grader this year. Volunteer sign ups will be published soon. Please email PTA with questions at montaakinpta@gmail.com
Second Step Tips and Tools for Parents-Thank you Ms. Lehn
Students have been continuing to learn about managing strong feelings, such as anger, frustration and anxiety by using the Ways to Calm Down (Stop, Name your feeling, Calm down). When strong feelings are under control, children are better able to think clearly and avoid hurting other people’s bodies or feelings.
Belly breathing, using positive self-talk, and counting in their head are a few strategies they’ve been practicing. See if your child can name another calm down strategy they’ve learned in class!
