FROM DR. B
Happy Wednesday, Trailblazers!
The weather has changed, I see more pumpkins, and the sweatshirts in the lost and found are piling up. It must be fall!
As we head into the middle of this week, let’s keep going with this year’s feature: The Stories of SCCS. Last week featured Mel Punt, the Outlet 75 manager. This week, let’s learn more about Megan Haan, one of the SCCS kindergarten teachers.
Have a great rest of your week!

STORIES OF SCCS: Megan Haan, Kindergarten Teacher
My first year (2010-2011) was as a 1:1 para in kindergarten. I have been teaching kindergarten at SCCS since 2011.
I love to read. Over the past few years, I have found reading to be both a comfort and a great way to stretch my thinking. I enjoy a good mix of fiction and nonfiction and often find it hard to put a book down until it's done. This year, I’m on pace to complete 52 books (and yes, the Laura Ingalls Wilder and Beverly Cleary books that I share with my daughter at bedtime count every bit as much as the books by C.S. Lewis, Sandra McCracken, Kate Bowler, and Nicole Baart that I enjoy on my own!)
Originally, I chose SCCS because they had an open position, and I needed a job after my husband and I moved back from Chicago. But I have stayed at SCCS because I have found it to be a community of dedicated, loving, and faithful teachers, administrators, support staff, students, parents, and grandparents. I love that my own children get to experience a classroom where their teachers are role models and love them for who God created them to be.
As a kindergarten teacher, I have the privilege of working with some of the youngest students in the building. Five- and six-year-olds have so much natural curiosity. And my hope is that by nurturing that curiosity through hands-on learning, exploring, and playing, they will love learning beyond their time in my classroom.
Which throughline do you most identify with and why?
One that comes naturally to me is being a Creation Enjoyer. I love to spend time outside whether that is spending time in my garden, going on bike rides, reading in my hammock, hiking with my family, or exploring local and national parks. God's world is full of beautiful places, and I love to see all the amazing things God has created.
SCCS has always been passionate about providing quality Christian education and as both a teacher and parent I can see how that is lived out. I get to experience the dedication of the people who work at SCCS on a daily basis through their words and actions. And at home I get to see the ways my children have thrived in an environment that treasures them.
EDUCATIONAL CHOICE SUMMIT
Parents – we have a wonderful opportunity to support the educational choice movement next week. On October 6, you are invited to attend the Educational Choice Summit at Dordt University in the BJ Haan Auditorium. Speakers to include Governor Reynolds, Jordan Drakery and Steve Holwerda from EdChoice, Representative Wheeler and Senator Taylor, as well as two very special testimonials from families who have benefited from educational choice. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will finish with some refreshments and opportunities for continued conversation. Please mark your calendars and share this opportunity with your friends who are supportive of the idea of educational choice.
PARENT SURVEY
Each year, we invite parents to complete a feedback survey. We use this information to discover trends and also to compare this year's results to last year's results. We also survey faculty/staff and our 7th and 8th graders.
We invite every parent to complete the survey, and the deadline is October 7 at noon. We take seriously the information shared and use it to celebrate and improve.
Please head to the link below to complete the survey. As you consider your responses, please think about your broad experience with SCCS, not necessarily individual experiences that may have happened. We would like to hear your feedback regarding the overall experience at school.
Thanks for your participation!

HERITAGE VILLAGE
Our third graders are learning about communities of the past and the history of Sioux Center. They enjoyed a field experience to Heritage Village at its new location in Sioux Center. They got a glimpse of a "time gone by" as they
Highlights of the day included visiting the one room schoolhouse, making rope, seeing farming methods of the past, watching horseshoes being made at the blacksmith shop, and watching lumber being cut at the sawmill.
When they returned to the classroom, they wrote reflections on what they learned, what they loved, and what they will live to remember from the experience.
We truly have a treasure right in our town! Thanks to Heritage Village, Sioux Center and all the volunteers for helping our kids experience a bit of the past!

PELLA STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH AWARD
Since 2018, Pella Corporation of Sioux Center has sponsored a monthly Pella Staff Member of the Month Award, in which they recognize faculty and staff who go above and beyond in our local schools. They accept nominations for teachers from Sioux Center Christian and Sioux Center Community Schools each month and choose one nominee to receive an award of $500 to be used to impact their classrooms. Denny Van Zanten, Sioux Center plant manager, surprises the winning teacher with a classroom visit and a “big check”, sharing the nomination letter and the award.
We have had fifteen of our faculty receive this award since 2018, which has provided $7,500 toward classroom enhancements such as classroom furniture, learning toys, music instruments, books, and much more! Some of the teachers who have been nominated in the past are Andrea Wieringa (2019), Tammy Nieuwsma (2019), Rebecca Vander Werf (2020 & 2022), Sheila Tietgen (2020 & 2022), Emily Penner (2020), Samantha De Weerd (2020), Marissa Westra (2021), and Beth Bleeker (2022).
We believe all our faculty and staff are amazing and encourage you to take the time nominate one (or more) of your children’s teachers! Complete the nomination form (https://www.siouxcenterchristian.com/editoruploads/files/SXC_STAFF_OF_THE_MONTH.pdf ; printed copies are available by the TRIP window) and return to our school office or mail to/drop off at Pella Corp. by the 25th of each month during the school year (September 25 is the first deadline). Pella kindly keeps nominations “in play” for 3 months to provide multiple opportunities for an outstanding staff member to be recognized. Feel free to re‐nominate someone if you feel they are deserving, and they didn’t win the award during the 3 months that the nomination was in play.
We are extremely grateful to Pella Corp for this program that serves to encourage and bless our faculty and staff!
