Message from Mrs. Gray
Dear Salem Woods Families,
We are excited that elementaries in Monroe have been partnering with a company called Playworks to transform recess for our students! Playworks helps kids to stay active and builds valuable life skills through play. Today, we hosted a Playworks trainer at Salem Woods for the day. He was able to view our recesses, play with kids, and debrief/plan with our counselor and recess paraeducators on how to continue to make positive changes in our recesses.
Continuing to adapt and incorporate the Playworks structures and games will help us create a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills such as:
Conflict Resolution: Recess doesn’t have to be chaotic. At a better recess, kids acquire tools to work out disagreements and differences.
Leadership Skills: When they’re playing amongst their peers, kids have a valuable opportunity to develop a sense of fairness, confidence, and communication.
Academic Success: Kids who are engaged during recess are more likely to participate in class, which means better attendance and better grades.
Learn more about Playworks here: https://www.playworks.org/about/why-play/.
Thank you for bringing your students to school on time and preparing them for learning each day. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me at graym@monroe.wednet.edu or at 360-804-3600.
In Partnership,
Melanie Gray
