Prendiville Catholic College
8 September 2017
Emily shared her story that many years ago she met a lady. On getting to know this lady she was given a special medallion. This medal the lady said was her brother's medallion and it had kept her safe for many years. She wanted to give it to Emily to keep her safe. The lady was Redmond Prendiville's sister.
Emily was very keen to find a home for the medallion and it was one of her parishioners that looks after her that suggested Prendiville College. They made contact with the College to arrange a visit.
After meeting Emily we showed her where the medallion will be housed in the Prendiville Centre. She loved the sacred space of the Good Shepherd Chapel and said she felt at peace that the medallion will have a place she regarded as its home. Lynn and Warwick will work together to frame the medallion and record its story and we will invite Emily back when we install it.
The medallion will help tell and preserve our patrons story at Prendiville Catholic College.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on September 24th. This year, the Australian Bishops' Social Justice Statement is titled 'Everyone's Business: Developing an inclusive and sustainable economy'. The statement calls for an economy that is founded on justice and offers dignity and inclusion to every person.
For further details about the Social Justice Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website or call (02) 8306 3499.
A reminder to all families that students are to return for the commencement of Term 4 on Monday 9 October dressed in full summer uniform. Please ensure all dresses have been altered over the holiday period so they are worn to the top of the knee. Boys’ shorts need to be fitted so they are worn on the waist not the hips.
Students are asked to return to school well groomed, with haircuts and styles in accordance with the College policy.
If your child is in years 10, 11 or 12 and they did not receive their Meningococcal Immunisation at the College on Monday 21 August, and you would like your child immunised, please feel free to contact Karyn Dore (the City of Joondalup school based Immunisation Co coordinator) on 08 9400 4938, and you can make an appointment at your convenience at the Joondalup clinic. The immunisation is free of charge.

The final team has been decided and has been posted to the SPORTAL Page on SEQTA for next Thursday’s (14/9) ACC Athletics Carnival. Also available is a programme of events throughout the day, maps of event locations and excursion form information. The task of filling all 230 events is very difficult every year and we have settled on what we believe to be a very strong overall team. It is imperative that any injuries or illnesses are reported to me ASAP so other arrangements can be made to cover these unfortunate events to ensure we will be competing with our best possible team.
We will have one final training session after school on Tuesday 12/9 for all events as our final prep before the Carnival. This will be a very light run/session that all students are encouraged to attend if they are able to make it. Thank you to all staff, students and parents for your support over what has been a very long Athletics season in 2017.
2018 Sport Leaders
Our 2017 Sports Captain, Kayla Devellerez, introduced a fantastic initiative this year by electing Sports Leaders to some of our major sporting endeavours. These students have worked closely with staff throughout the year within their elected sport to promote and develop both participation and performance and we are keen to continue this in 2018.
The nomination process will take place early in Term 4 and students who are currently in Year 10/11 are eligible to nominate. The positions available include Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Touch Rugby, Soccer, AFL, Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country and Surfing. More information regarding the nomination process will be released through the Daily Notices in the coming weeks.
Ella Scullino (Year 7) won a gold medal at the National Cheerleading/Tumble championships in Melbourne.
Prendiville’s Senior Boys Soccer Team played off against Woodvale on Tuesday in the Northern Conference Finals of the School Sport WA Soccer competition. Although they were unsuccessful going down 2-0 in extra time, they should be congratulated as this result places them in the top four soccer teams in the State and they have progressed past numerous Soccer specialist schools along the way.
CHAMPION SCHOOLS SOCCER NORTHERN FINALS
What a season it has been for the Senior Boys Soccer Team making it to the Northern Schools Finals and narrowly missing out on the Northern Title and a shot at the State Title.
On route to the finals, the boys beat last year’s Champion Schools Runners-Up, Mercy College. They then went on to the beat Guildford Grammar and St Stephen’s Carramar to earn a place in the Northern Finals. It was always going to be a hard game against one of the best teams in the state, Woodvale Senior High School but the boys were pumped and ready for the challenge.
The boys were soaking up a lot of the pressure early on in the first half and nearly scored on the break through Alex Mayer, who was unfortunate not to beat the keeper. With no goals scored in the second half, the boys were working really hard and showed spirit to hold on for the full time whistle. Big Tom Ullrich was once again outstanding in goals and nothing was getting past him. Unfortunately, two minutes into extra time, Woodvale got a goal and soon after scored another and the game finished 2-0.
The boys should be very proud of their efforts throughout the season, finishing runners-up in the northern finals and being in the top 4 schools in the state, which is an amazing effort for a school that doesn’t have a specialist soccer programme. The boys also showed maturity and definitely made the College and their parents proud.
Well done boys!
Head of Physical Education
The past couple of weeks have been very busy for the Music Department, with highly successful performances in the WA Schools Jazz Festival, the CPAF Secondary Concert Band section, CPAF Secondary Choral section and St George’s Cathedral's winter recital series.
Our students have been superb and we have received numerous positive comments regarding our beautiful music uniform, the students’ professionalism and the overall quality and standard of our performances. A big thank you to Kathryn MacNeil (Jazz Band), Nicole Dixon (Junior Winds and Concert Winds) and Anne-Marie Duce (College Choir and SSA Vocal Ensemble) for their superb direction and organisation of these ensembles. Thank you to our wonderful piano accompanist David Hicks, to Lisa Baltovich and Sue Russell for their invaluable help and support at these events and to Vicky Stewart for her ongoing administrative genius.
It’s a great Music team here at Prendiville Catholic College, with a whole bunch of fabulous, dedicated (and exhausted) students! Please see links below to a few short video clips and photos.
The Prendiville Catholic College Choir made up of over 90 students along with the Saxophone Quartet and Flute Ensemble gave a stunning lunchtime performance at St George’s Cathedral in Perth on Wednesday 30 August. This event is held annually as part of the Concerts at One series that St George’s run to provide secondary and university students the opportunity to perform in a unique environment to an appreciative audience. This is the second year Prendiville has been invited to perform and this year included the College Choir, SSA Chamber Choir, Flute Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet and solo performances from Brendan Arbuckle on trumpet, Rhys Isaac on piano and Jessica Mullen with a solo vocal performance. The students worked hard preparing for this event and the result was outstanding and received many compliments. A big thank you to Ms Anne-Marie Duce (Choral Director) and Mr David Hicks (Accompanist) for making this event so successful.
Below is a link to some video and photos from the event along with a link to a flattering review from the Seesaw Arts Magazine.

Prendiville Dance Company
The Prendiville Dance Company consists of 31 dance students from Years 8 to 12. These talented students performed their contemporary and hip-hop fusion piece entitled 'Our Tribe' with professionalism, energy and style on Wednesday 16 August at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival in the Creative Dance section, held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. The adjudicators’ comments included: “Great discipline and teamwork” and “Choreography overall was so cleverly aligned with the soundtrack and staging!”. This group was awarded with an 'Outstanding' Award, which is the highest award you can achieve in Dance at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.
Year 8/9 Elite Dance Ensemble
The Year 8/9 Elite Dance Ensemble was a brand new group which was introduced particularly for those dancers wanting to be a part of the Dance Company but had other commitments that clashed with the after school rehearsals. The ensemble consists of 18 dance students from Years 8 to 9 who successfully endured an intensive audition process lead by the Dance captains during the middle of Term 1. The team was selected and rehearsals commenced every Tuesday morning before school under the direction of Mrs Johnson.
This year’s routine was choreographed by Mrs Johnson in the theatrical jazz genre with the aim to bring audiences to the entertainment and theatre district of Broadway. These students also performed these pieces at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival in the Creative Dance section. The adjudicators’ comments included; “We appreciate the technical difficulty of the choreography, especially for Year 8/9” and “We really enjoyed this bright and entertaining performance”. This group was awarded with an 'Excellence' Award, which is the second highest award you can achieve in Dance at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.
Prendiville Tap Troupe
After a successful year in 2016, the decision was made (for the second year) to create a Tap Troupe with dancers from Years 8-12. The students rehearsed during various lunch times throughout Term 2 and 3 to acquire their energetic routine from Dance Prefect, Amelia Nutini.
The routine took the audience on a journey to the Copacabana. Again, these students also performed these pieces at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival in the Creative Dance section. The adjudicators’ comments included; “Excellent timing and rhythms are clear and concise”, “Great sense of fun and enjoyment – you transported us to the Copacabana!” and “a real showstopper that highlighted your talent and skill”. This group was awarded with an 'Outstanding' Award, which is the highest award you can achieve in Dance at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.
Well done to each of these Dance troupes, we could not be more proud of their commitment to these extra-curricular Dance programs.

A huge thank you to our wonderful P & F for their generous support in purchasing the furniture for our new Careers area in the Library. The students are making great use of it, not only for careers sessions but also for classes, break times and after school study.
Accessit Library Management System
Check out Accessit our new cloud-based Library management system. It integrates all of our Library IT systems. For example, our EBSCO and eLibrary databases as well as our Wheelers eBooks. It gives Library users 24-hour access to all resources from any device. It simultaneously searches across multiple online content providers. The Library Search facility can be found on the student dashboard. Students log in using their usual school user name and password. They can reserve books and renew an item once, if it has not been reserved by someone else. Accessit also allows users to set up their reading interests so alerts can be sent to them of new Library books, which match their interests. It will also send recommendations based on previous loans.

THE WA YOUTH THEATRE PROGRAM COMES TO THE HUB
Sometimes there is an opportunity staring us in the face and we don’t recognize the significance of it. The opportunity offered by the WA Youth Theatre Company may be one such moment. This Saturday, September 9 and next Saturday September 16 WAYT Co is offering workshops here at our Redmond Theatre which focus on intensive performance skills. Students who have dreams of a career in the theatre would do well to enroll in one of these workshops. It is rare that The Hub can offer an opportunity like this for the bargain basement price of $40 (that’s $10 per professional tutor or even less if you bring a friend). Dreams only come true through risk taking and recognizing opportunities when they appear. To enroll call 9226 2144 or click. Still not sure, phone Mr Chris Greenwood on 9301 6249 for more information.
