Catching Up With Castro's Class

November 12th, 2013

Dear Parents,

The holidays are quickly approaching! It is amazing how quickly time is flying by us this year.

In this newsletter you can find updates about what we are learning in class, pictures of our latest learning experiences, and updates about Lake Murray. I hope you have a great rest of the week!

English Language Arts

Reading- We have been focusing on determining the main idea of informational texts, the supporting details, and explaining how the details support the main idea. This week the students will be reading 2 informational texts on natural forces and comparing and contrasting the two texts. When they are finished they are going to create an informational brochure on the force of their choice.

Reading Goals- We have come to the end of our second reading goal. The students will bring home their rubric tonight and go over how they will be graded with you. I have told them that someone at home must sign the rubric showing that you talked about it together. In a week or so we will be creating goal number 3!

Writing- Students have finished up their opinion writings on a global topic. These wonderful writings are hanging in our hallway. To accompany their writings the students created a Pic Collage that would show their main points. You can see their pic collages by clicking the Smilebox Playback link below.

We will be finishing our AGP Place Value Unit this week. Our test will be on Wednesday and a study guide will go home tomorrow with the students. We will be reviewing as a class all of tomorrow. We have been reviewing every 2-3 lessons with checkups and written responses so the students are very well prepared for the test. After this unit we will return to My Math. Our next unit will be on multiplication and division.

Timed Multiplication Quizzes- We are already on our 7's quiz and will continue with 8's next week! The students are doing GREAT!

Science and Social Studies

Science- This week we will begin group animal projects. Look out for an email with these creations! After this project we will study habitat changes and food chains. We are only a few weeks away from the end of our plants and animals study.

Social Studies- We have finished up explorers and starting learning about the colony of Carolina today. During this unit we will study how the royal government developed the Carolina colony and how different groups of settlers affected the development and culture of Carolina. You can always check your student's expandable for notes on what we are learning in Social Studies if you want to review at home OR if you just want to talk to them about what they are learning.
