From the Garden Club
Shout out to the kids who joined Garden Club this week and parent volunteer, Mr. Jon Howard! Your help was greatly appreciated as we cleared the beds for planting and harvested some Jerusalem Artichokes (Helianthus tuberosus).
One club member from last year mentioned, "Isn't that the sunflower we planted last year?" And indeed it was! Jerusalem artichokes or sunchokes are native American sunflowers with edible roots. (See photo below.) Jerusalem artichokes can be roasted and eaten alongside your favorite springtime dishes just like in this recipe. In our home, we will have it as a side with mashed potatoes and a main dish of meat.
Although we originally listed club dates to be every other week, for continuity and maintenance, the following meetings will take place.
Wed, Mar 23 - Observation & Journaling: Recognizing Natural Patterns
Wed, April 6 - Outdoor Planting & Digging
Wed, April 20 - Observation & Journaling: Working on a Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Project
Wed, May 4 - Spring Sale for Teacher's Appreciation Week
Wed, May 18 - Observation & Journaling: Preparing for our Seed Exhibition
Wed, June 1 - Seed Exhibition Day & Celebration!
