October Newsletter

One Month In!

After that extra-long summer break, it seems like both our teachers and students are getting used to being back at school. We are very blessed to be able to continue face-to-face learning.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services published updated guidelines regarding required and recommended safety precautions. The Salem Board for Christian Education will review the orders next Tuesday evening and discuss what and if changes are necessary. All Salem families will be notified of any changes to our current policy.

With the colder weather approaching, please remember the last day to wear shorts is October 16. Shorts can be worn during sports practices and games.

End of First Quarter

October 21st is the end of the First Quarter. Report cards will be sent home with each child on Monday, October 26th.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on November 5th. School dismissal will be at 11:30 A.M. Please look for more information to be sent home from closer to the conference date.

Room Parent

Every classroom is still in need of a room parent and a couple of helpers. This is a great opportunity for you to help our classroom teachers. Please let Mrs. Lahmann know if you are interested. All help is greatly appreciated!

We are currently looking for a leader to take over the Lutheran Pioneer program in our school. Mrs. Hoenshell has graciously offered her expertise and time to help the new leader as needed. If interested, please stop by the office. We are hoping to start Pioneers again in January.

Our Salem Girls Basketball team has its first game this Friday at Emanuel in Lansing.

School Website

We are in the process of updating our school website. If you have pictures of your children, yourself, or your parents attending Salem School, please email them to the school. If they are not in digital form, you can bring them into the office to be scanned.

October Cancellations

-Fall Fest -Fall Fest has been canceled for this year. We know how much the students look forward to showing parents and extended family members their creative projects.

-Follett Book Fair - The Fall Book Fair is also canceled. Your students still bring home Scholastic book orders every month. Please consider purchasing books through Scholastic for your child. With each order, our school and classrooms earn points that can be used to purchase books and materials.

Earn Cash for Our School

-Kroger - Kroger donates a percentage of your sales to Salem. This money goes into our faculty Continuing Education fund, which sends teachers to different courses throughout the year. Please click on the link below for more information. Salem’s NPO# is DG733.

- Box Tops - In the past, you were able to cut off the box tops and turn them into us here at school. Now, all you need to do is scan your receipt with the Box Top App, and we will automatically receive the credits. Click the link below for more information.

More Ways to Give

Costa Maya

Pastor Martin Valleskey

Hello! I’m Pastor Martin Valleskey, serving Costa Maya Ministries as pastor of our mission in the town of Mahahual, Mexico. Our local congregation is called Cruz de Cristo (“Cross of Christ”) Lutheran Church. Thank you so much for partnering with us to share the saving Gospel of our Lord Jesus in this remote area!

I was born in Blantyre, Malawi (Africa) to Missionary Stephen Valleskey and Sally Valleskey. Having foreign mission work in the family was a big influence on me wanting to do the same. After graduating from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, I served the Hispanic congregations of Christ and St. Peter Lutheran in Milwaukee. In 2015 God called me to preaching the Word on the southern end of the beautiful Caribbean coast of Mexico. By God’s grace around 100 people in and around our town – many of them children - are regularly learning about Jesus! I especially like to go to people’s homes and bring them the Word where they are, up to an hour away from our church building. Very few know what a Lutheran church is, or what the Bible teaches. Others don’t have their own transportation. When we go to the people, more can be filled with God’s Word of grace.

In my free time I enjoy outdoor activities like swimming and diving, and smoking meat on a smoker we built for the church. It’s warm here all the time, so I’m one of the few pastors I know that gets to wear sandals to work. I’ve always been a big fan of Mexican food. Here the seafood straight out of the ocean, often from the same day, is delicious, although the local favorite pepper, the habanero, takes some getting used to.

In the coming months I will share more about God’s work here which YOU are helping to accomplish. Thank you so much for being our mission partner! Please include our mission and me in your prayers!
