P.E. Methods
Classroom Management - Directions
When they see the sign language for the letter "A," the students group together, so that you as the teacher can't walk in between any two students. This is for instances when other environmental noise (lawn mower, other classes, etc.) would warrant being a in tight space.
"B" formation allows the students to give each other enough space so that you can walk in between any two students, but cannot sit. This is the typical formation which allows you not to have to use a loud voice, but gives them their personal space as well.
App of the Month - Sworkit Kids
Sworkit Kids offer quick exercises for the students to do, using videos as models. You can even create your own playlist ahead of time!
Skillastics
Do a YouTube search for the creator Sandy Slade. She does some amazing basketball tricks and is an energetic speaker and presenter!
Did You Know?
24 Second Shot Clock
Danny Biasone, the late owner of the Syracuse Nationals, invented the shot clock following the 1953-54 season to try to speed up the game and prevent teams from stalling. The lack of pace in NBA games in the early 1950s was widespread, typified by a game between the Fort Wayne Pistons and the Minneapolis Lakers on Nov. 22, 1950. The Pistons defeated the Lakers 19-18 in the lowest scoring game in NBA history.
Biasone chose the unusual number of 24 seconds by figuring that the average number of shots two teams would take during a game was 120. He divided that number into 48 minutes or 2,880 seconds, the length of a game, and ended up with the magical number of 24.
Said Maurice Podoloff, the NBA's first president: "The adoption of the clock was the most important event in the NBA."
One adaptation can drastically change the way a game is played and received. What adaptation can you make to your current curriculum?
Funding Opportunities
Donors Choose and Target
Pedometers that turn steps taken during P.E. into a fun game, yoga balls as bouncy desk chairs, indoor vertical gardens that grow delicious lunchtime salads—we know kids have the best ideas for making their schools better places to learn and thrive. And at Target we believe that if you empower kids they can make a difference, so we're giving up to $5 million to fund kid-inspired public school classroom projects across America this school year. Kids and teachers find out how you can work together to submit your awesome kid-inspired ideas (and see here for some examples to spark your creativity!).
