A Note From Rachel
Kettering Teachers,
I want to continue to thank you for your flexibility and resilience as we move ahead into this new school year. As we get slightly more accustomed to our new normal, be proud of all the hard work you have put in to get us here. Every day is a new moment for us to support our Kettering KIDS in their learning and their growth. We couldn't do it alone and we can't do it without each other. Continue to give yourself grace as we all grow into our new learning and our uncharted school year. Remember, sometimes it is best to go slow to go fast.
Please continue to keep me in the loop of communication, and let me know how I can support you and our Kettering family.
Rachel
Resetting CORE 5 for your students
Teachers,
Long Beach Unified School District has made the decision to allow teachers to decide on the reset placement for all students using Lexia Core5 for the 2020-2021 school year.
Attached are simple directions to assist you in resetting your student's Core 5 placement.
Attendance Policy - please communicate to families
Attendance
Provide grace to students and parents around attendance through outreach and conversation.
Take daily attendance in Synergy following the standard protocol.
***SB98 requires that we provide an alternative means of capturing attendance for students who were not able to participate synchronously (but either attempted but could not because of technology issues or instead did asynchronous work).
In TVUE, there is a new Class Check-In screen, which is designed strictly to capture attendance, through asynchronous work, for the students that did not participate in the synchronous learning and were marked absent for the class period, A comment is required that describes the qualifying asynchronous work completed by the student to receive alternative credit for attendance.
Parents should let teachers and front office know (Kristen Speirs is our attendance clerk)
How are the Children?
“How are ALL of our Kettering children doing?” As you are getting to know your students, what do they need? Giving them constant and consistent opportunities to grow their sense of self, sense of community and sense of safety is pivotal in our distant learning. Are our students better today than they were yesterday because of the care that you are inspiring and providing?

CANVAS - Preparing for Substitute Teachers:
Creating Zoom Meetings:
Do NOT use Personal Meeting ID. (If it is not in “Meeting Options” in Canvas, then disable it on the Zoom.us Settings under the “Schedule a Meeting” header).
Add Alternate Hosts - Principal and Office Supervisors.
Click on Save and verify that the meeting link is visible to students by going into Student View in Canvas.
Creating Zoom Meeting Links for Subs
- Open your class course and create a Zoom meeting in Canvas with the settings mentioned above.
- Ensure that the alternate hosts (Rachel and Claudia) have been added so that in case of teacher absence the alternate host can start the class for the sub.
- Create a Module for sub access. Create a Page titled Zoom Link in the Module.
- Add the Zoom link and any instructions to that page. (This Zoom link meeting will only be used in the case of your absence.)
When possible, as you prepare for your absence, forward the sub zoom meeting link to Claudia (cc' Rachel). Publish your sub module for the day(s) you expect to be absent.
School staff designated as alternate hosts will be able to start the all-day Zoom meeting and allow access for the substitute teacher.
