PCMS WEEKLY UPDATE
September 6, 2019
Thank you to everyone who was able to join us this morning for our first 6th Grade Pastries with Pirates event. It was great to see all of the moms & dads, brothers & sisters, and grandmas & grandpas in attendance. We are always thankful to be serving our students and families who are so supportive and involved in the community. Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Wallis's foreign language students sang the french alphabet to the tune of "Dancing Queen". They went looking for a king to join them and found two - Dr. Miller and Mr. Mueller!
Mr. Peterson's science class was outside enjoying the beautiful weather while studying Newton's 2nd Law using the Design Model!
We thoroughly enjoyed visiting with families that attended our 6th Grade Pastries with Pirates breakfast this morning!
Student/Parent Handbook (Action Needed)
Thank you for the great response on getting the Receipt of Parent/Student Handbook forms signed and returned to us! With that said, we still have some outstanding forms. If you and your student have not finalized this yet, please take a few minutes to do so over the weekend. Then have your student drop the signed/dated form off in the office Monday morning. (If you have already done this, thank you! You can disregard this message;)
Simply go to the link below and review this year’s parent/student handbook. (You can also access this from our PCMS website under “Site Shortcuts”.) Once you have reviewed the handbook, we ask that you sign and return the last page to us. Recap of details are below:

Science Olympiad Meeting - 9/17/19
Interested students and their parents are invited to attend the PCMS Science Olympiad kick-off meeting on Tues, Sept 17 at 6pm in the PCMS Forum Room. Science Olympiad functions much like any team sport, but it focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) disciplines. It exposes students to challenging competition and a wide array of career choices. It requires active participation, self-initiative, commitment, teamwork and practice throughout the year. Each school-based team is allowed to bring up to 15 selected students who are cross-trained in a variety of events within their skill set to a regional competition, which entitles them to attend the state tournament. However, many school teams boast more than 40 members, allowing for a rich apprentice and mentoring system for all involved. State tournament winners go on to participate in the Science Olympiad National Tournament held at a different university each year. There is no direct cost to join.
If your child is interested in this opportunity, there will be a student-only info meeting during Pirate Time on Tues, Sept 10 to give basic team information. Parents and students can plan on attending our formal kick-off meeting on Tues, Sept 17.
Please stop by the PCMS Science Olympiad website for the latest information.
Platte County Education Foundation Fundraiser ~ Aug 28-Sept 10
This week, we kicked off our Platte County Education Foundation discount card sales program. Our schools, in conjunction with Major Saver, work with businesses throughout our District to offer a $15 discount card providing customers with 21 local buy-one-get-one-free offers. In most cases, redeeming only two offers offsets the cost of the card. Proceeds from the card campaign directly benefit your student's school and the Platte County Education Foundation. The Foundation gives back to the Platte County R-3 community by awarding annual pre-K through 12th grade classroom and building site grants, as well as senior scholarships. Check out this video to see some of the impact our Foundation has had. Your student should have brought home an envelope with information and instructions on Wednesday, August 28, and have been instructed to not go "door-to-door," but to offer to relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. Collection dates start on Tuesday, September 3, and the program wraps up on Tuesday, September 10. Please consider purchasing a card and supporting our schools!
Message RE: Impacted Traffic Patterns
Intersection improvements/traffic signal installation at the intersection of Kentucky Ave & Platte Falls Rd will start on Mon, Sept 9, 2019. Work is scheduled to continue until late Oct. The project will install a four-way traffic signal system and an ADA pedestrian crossing.
Although the intersection will remain open, traffic patterns will be impacted throughout the construction schedule. There may be brief periods of total closure to raise the traffic poles and signal mast arms. Construction is scheduled from 7am to 5:30pm, Mon-Thurs. Construction work will be adjusted as much as possible to minimize impact on bus and school traffic immediately before and after school each day.
Starting Sept 9 through the end of construction, Kentucky Ave will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction; Platte Falls Rd will retain one lane of traffic in each direction, but the turn lanes on Platte Falls at the intersection will be closed. The City of Platte City, the contractor, and the District will remain in close coordination during the project to adjust work schedules and traffic patterns as needed.
