Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter

Volume 24, Issue 9, October 21, 2016

Dear Thunderbird Families,

Thank you all for contributing to our Back to School Donation Drive. It's not too late to bring in your donation. Please know that your contributions have a significant impact on our educational program with regards to enrichment in music, art, P. E., our librarian and classroom aides. Our staff and students are so appreciative of your contributions. The Thunderbird experience would be very different without your support.

Highlights of the week

The highlight of my week was Thornhill being invited by OUSD Superintendent Antwan Wilson to an awards ceremony for our National Blue Ribbon Schools designation. The ceremony was held prior to the weekly board meeting at Met West High School. Mr. Wilkins, one of our 5th-grade teachers, and I agreed to have a student join me at the ceremony to receive the award. We both thought that Charlotte Fithian, a student in Mr. Wilkins' class (pictured below with Supt. Wilson and I), would be a great representative from the student body. Charlotte read a beautiful speech at the podium. She articulated the joys of being a student at Thornhill and why it was great to receive the National Blue Ribbon award.

Another Highlight was seeing two students at recess having fun together. I was particularly drawn by the tight bond that 4th-grader Josie (on right in the photo below) had with new 4th grader Akira (on left in the photo), who has moved here from New York. They told me they were best friends from day one and will be going on a science play date to Discovery Day at AT&T Park on November 5. Way to go Thunderbirds! Making friends and heading out on learning adventures. To learn more about Discovery Day go to:

To all have a wonderful weekend.

Best,

Mr. Daubenspeck

Back to School Donation Drive Update

Once again, a big THANK YOU to Thornhill families! Support for the Back to School Donation Drive has been incredible, and to date, we have raised almost $136,000.

Our goal is to raise $160,000 for the year and we are just a tiny bit short of hitting that level. We have had 151 families donate so far. With this in mind, we are extending our donation drive until Sunday, Oct. 23rd.

If every family who has not yet donated can donate any amount ($50, $100, $500) or make a commitment to donate that amount during the school year we can reach our goal. You can do this by writing post-dated checks, setting up a payment plan via PayPal or even doing a payroll deduction. Any amount can make a difference for our school. If you are unclear on how to do this, just email us at bsdd@thornhillschool.org and we can figure out what works best for you.

We are so close to reaching our goal and know we can get there with your support. Please reach out to us if you have any questions at bsdd@thornhillschool.com

Many Thanks,

Christine Pereira & Angela Engel

Make-up Picture Day

Did you get your child's school pictures back and think, "Hmm...Well, we could have done better..."?

Never fear. There will be a make-up picture day on Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. Any parent who wants their child to have a do-over picture can do so then, and order forms can be found in the school office. However, please let the office and your child's teacher know about your picture plans prior to the picture day.

Support Joaquin Miller School

Show some neighborly love and give two hours of your time to support our friends at Joaquin Miller. Sign up for a two-hour slot as a volunteer at their annual benefit auction on November 5 at Sequoia Country Club.

https://www.konstella.com/cd/ gqOWq3

It's super easy, no experience necessary, and your efforts are appreciated beyond measure. Get a friend and make an evening out of it. Have friends at JM? Donate your time to hang out with your friends. What could be better?

And in return, they send volunteers to work at our auction on March 11, 2017. Win-Win for everyone! Be sure to note that you are from Thornhill on the signup.

Please email becky.urbano@gmail.com with any questions.

Groceries Delivered to Your Doorstep + 10% Goes to Thornhill!

OK, I know I told you about GrubMarket in last week’s newsletter and how they are donating 3% of orders back to Thornhill, which is awesome. Well, I was also contacted by a similar company called Good Eggs and decided that Thornhill should also join their fundraising program period, which is during the months of October, November and December, since they offer a great fundraising opportunity, too.

GoodEggs is offering Thornhill families some FREE groceries AND will give back 10% of every order to the school during Oct/Nov/Dec!

All you need to do is . . .

1. Order your groceries at goodeggs.com

2. Get $15 of FREE groceries on your next order and enter the code THORNHILL at checkout for automatic entry in the fundraiser for the rest of the fall (10% of every order goes to Thornhill!)

3. Enjoy your delicious groceries and feel good knowing you're supporting the school

More about Good Eggs:

Order your groceries today on our site or iOS app, and they'll be on your doorstep tomorrow. It's that simple.

Extra fun facts about Good Eggs:

· Convenient: Good Eggs delivers seven days a week to your home. Order by midnight and have them at your door the next day!

· Competitive Pricing: We beat or match prices on all products that we carry in common with typical grocery stores.

· Amazing Assortment: We have everything you need! Beyond amazing, farmers' market quality produce we also carry everything you could find at a typical grocery store to stock your fridge, pantry and plate.

Just think how much money we could earn for Thornhill just by doing what we have to do anyway (buy food for our families)! And you don’t even have to go to a grocery store! Order online in minutes and your groceries will magically appear on your doorstep the next day. They give you a two-hour delivery window. If you’re not there when it’s delivered, no worries. The food is surrounded by ice packs so will stay cold for several hours.
