News from the Nest

Fifth Grade Outside Event (Buford Corn Maze)

PMES 5th graders are invited to an evening of fun at the Buford Corn Maze! The maze is located at 4470 Bennett Road, Buford, 30519, and transportation is on your own. Learn more about the maze at This is optional event and is not school sponsored.

When? Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016 5:00-7:00 p.m. Arrive a few minutes early to check in. Upon arrival, participants will be divided into large groups that will rotate through the activities. If your child wants to participate with specific friends, please carpool or arrive at the same time.

How Much? $17 per person (For ages 4 and up. Kids 3 and under are free with a paying adult.) Ticket includes the maze, hayride, corn box, animal viewing, two slices of pizza and a bottle of Gatorade. Siblings and parents are welcome to participate if tickets are purchased. There is no maximum number of participants at this event.

Jackets and Cooler Weather

As the temperatures begin to drop and students start to bring jackets to school, please make sure to have your child's jacket labelled with their first and last name. This will increases the chances that it will be returned if misplaced.


Our PBL unit over inherited and acquired traits will be beginning next week! This unit will utilize technology and we would love for our students to take advantage of the BYOD policy. If you choose to allow your child to bring their own device, please make sure you have completed the attached BYOD form below.

Blue Ridge Field Trip

Please remember to be sending back your Blue Ridge field trip permission slips in. Payments can be made through MealPay. There are two payment options for you to choose from.

Red Ribbon Week

Our school will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week the week of October 24th. Each day has a fun theme as a way we can express ourselves in healthy and positive ways!

Fall Frenzy

Mom’s grab your favorite little guy (or guys) for an evening filled with dancing, games, refreshments, and FUN!
Come dressed in your favorite duo/trio costume (think Woody/Jessie, Supermom/Superman, etc)! Tickets go on Sale 10/1 and will close on 10/7

(or when bash sells out).

$25/couple;$10/per additional son. More info to come late September (Friday Folders).
The bash is open to all current PMES K-5th graders only.

Upcoming and Continuing Units of Study

Language Arts

Students have explored similes, metaphors, idioms, sentence structure and commas. We will be starting work on Expository Writing next week.

Word Study

Students are working on Spelling Sort #21 this week, which will be tested on Wed. October 19th. Our new word list is attached below for the 2nd nine weeks.


We will be continuing our unit with rounding, adding, and subtracting decimals. The test is scheduled for next week as well. The study guide is attached and students will receive a hard copy. Your child's math teacher will inform your child of the testing date for their class. We will then be supporting the PBL project in science with budgeting for their dog. The new Math Resource Round-Up is included and linked below.

Science/Social Studies

For this Science unit, we will utilize Project Based Learning (PBL) to better our understanding inherited and acquired traits. Look for more information that went home this week regarding our "Bark in the Park" event. Please note that we will be using a lot of technology during this unit.
