Categorising Sentences

Declarative

These sentences make statements to convey information, and are always punctuated by a period / full stop.

Example: Rick used to be the town sheriff.

Interrogative

These sentences are inquisitive; they ask a question and so are punctuated with question marks.

Example: Have you been bitten?

Imperative

These sentences issue commands or requests. They are usually punctuated with a simple period, but sometimes they can be exclamations with exclamation marks.

Example: Do not shoot that zombie. / Do not shoot that zombie!

Exclamatory / Exclamative

These sentences express strong emotion and are always punctuated with exclamation marks.

Example: The walkers have surrounded us!
