CDS Middle School
November 3rd, 2017
From the Director
It was wonderful seeing so many of you show up to Parent Teacher Conference to learn more about your child's development at CDS. If there were any teachers who you wanted to meet with but didn't get the chance, please feel free to make an appointment with them at a later date. We'd like to extend a special thanks to the high school students from the Interpreter Club for helping our parents and teachers understand one another.
The CDS MS Halloween Party was a big success again this year! The efforts of the student council clearly paid off as the haunted house exceeded students' expectations for scariness. The evening concluded with an epic dance party! Be sure to watch the dance party video clip further in the newsletter (it's sure to generate a smile). We also want to thank Mr. Brennan and Ms. Koetje for guiding the young leaders in our Student Council through their planning and problem solving. Finally, a great big thank you to the parents who showed their support with treat bags and other delicious food items.
Looking ahead, on November 8th, the final contestants in the CDS MS Math Competition will present their mathematical model for the most efficient and affordable school maintenance plan. There will be three judges who will evaluate students on the quality of their plan as well as the effectiveness of their presentation skills.
Co-curricular clubs (CCs) and After School Programs (ASPs) for the Fall season will end with Thanksgiving Break. In the coming weeks, we will share more information about CC and ASP offerings and sign-ups for the Winter season.
Have a great weekend!
Cheongna Beauty Festival Last Saturday
We were so proud of the excellent performances conducted by our First Program, Middle School, and High School students. It was a pleasure to see so many parents and students visit us at the festival to show their support. As a school, we look forward to future opportunities to engage with the Cheongna community.
CDS MS Participate in KIMEA Large Ensemble Festival @ KIS
The CDS Orchestra, which rehearsed during CC time, had their first performance of the school year this past Tuesday!
We currently have 12 MS students in the ensemble and the rest are HS students. We were thrilled to have our students perform at the KAIAC Large Ensemble Festival hosted at KIS. We started out the day with a rehearsal in the morning, then loaded the bus for our trip to Pangyo. The students settled in the storage room and prepared to get ready for the performance.
We performed two pieces, a Classical piece called Amadeus! (from Symphony No. 25) by W.A. Mozart and a programmatic work called A Matador's Tale by Mark Lortz. The students played well and with lots of energy!
After the stage performance, the students had the opportunity to work with a string clinician. She directed the ensemble and experimented with various ways to improve the music and ensemble. This was a beneficial time have students work with another international music teacher and try new ways to play the music.
After lunch, the Orchestra sat in on Mr. Tolley's High School Choir performance, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. One humorous part of the day, was that as we were loading the buses, we got carried into a fire drill and had to line up on the field before we could leave the campus. Fortunately, we arrived back at CDS right before the school day ended.
