SENIORS: DID YOU KNOW THAT THE FAFSA IS NOW A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT IN ILLINOIS?

Beginning with the 2020-21 academic year, P. A. 101-180 requires all Illinois public high school students to complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Alternative Application for Illinois Financial Aid (Alternative Application) as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma. Additionally, high schools are expected to provide students and their families with any support or guidance necessary to comply with the requirement. For students who choose not to file an application, a waiver may be completed by their parent. The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) makes available through their website a FAFSA Nonparticipation Form (English and Spanish) for this purpose. Check out our FAFSA Update for more information.

NEWS FROM THE PTO

North Homecoming

North PTO provided four different snacks and water at the Homecoming dance. Weather was a bit chilly, which decreased the water needs and snack breaks students took, but the lights, laughter and dancing kept the students warm in the center of the field. A HUGE thanks to the Homecoming chair Michelle Principato who did a great planning job, made many store trips and organized and carried a ton of items! Thanks to her volunteer team Jack Principato, Rochelle Traub, Najia Ahmed and Robin Paris for helping make the evening a success.

NEWS FROM THE SCN LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER:

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The point of National Bullying Prevention Month was to transform a society that accepts bullying into a society that recognizes that bullying must – and can – be addressed through education and support. Resources to help parents and students can be found at StopBulling.gov. Click on any link to check out a book or find more information.

Gabe & Izzy: Speaking Up for America's Bullied by Gabrielle Ford “In middle school, Gabrielle “Gabe” Ford developed a degenerative muscle disease, and was harassed by bullies as a result. She did her best to keep her head high, but it wasn’t easy. Then Gabe got a dog, Izzy, who developed an uncannily similar disorder. They were invited to appear on Animal Planet to talk about their bond, which in turn led to an invitation to speak at a school. And so began Gabe’s career as an anti-bullying advocate. Here is her amazing story—from her lowest days dealing with various challenges, to the unbelievable and immediate bond with Izzy, to her ongoing mission to put an end to bullying, one school at a time.” GoodReads

All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson “In a series of personal essays, prominent journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George M. Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. From the memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five, to flea marketing with his loving grandmother, to his first sexual relationships, this young-adult memoir weaves together the trials and triumphs faced by Black queer boys. Both a primer for teens eager to be allies as well as a reassuring testimony for young queer men of color, All Boys Aren't Blue covers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy.” GoodReads
