Picture Yourself Growing in First Grade
Celebrating Authors - A Special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
This past week, 1S enjoyed and admired all of our hard work with a very special author celebration! We have finished our first writing unit - personal narratives. We worked extremely hard over the past few weeks. We learned how to think of an idea, plan across our fingers, and write our stories. We worked on spelling challenging words, editing on the go, and reading our writing. We learned how to bring our stories to life by making our characters think, feel, and talk. We learned from mentor authors and tried special writing crafts in our own writing like using pop out words and exact actions!
After hard work preparing for our author celebration, the day finally came! 1S held a SPECIAL ribbon cutting ceremony to introduce our published work to the world! We even had an EXTRA special guest as our ribbon cutter, Mrs. Schultz! She talked to the class about how proud she was of their work, and she celebrated with us!
It was a wonderful day, and every student in 1S was smiling and beaming with pride!
Up next in writing... Writing Non Fiction Teaching Books! Stay Tuned!
Reading Workshop: Non-Fiction Text Features
At the end of the week, we began to create our very own Non-Fiction text feature books on the iPad to show off our learning. Using the Book Creator app, we were able to type the name of the text feature, what it does, and include a picture. We are in the process of working on our books so we can save them to our virtual iBook library so we can share them and read them during The Daily Five! What an amazing week full of learning and creating!
Math
Much of Unit 3 focuses on number patterns: odd and even number patterns, patterns on the number line and number grid, and counting patterns. We will continue our steady development of other important first grade math skills like telling time and working with money. We will revisit these skills and extend them further.
Featured App: Connect Sums & Sums Stacker
Created by Carsten Studios these two apps are part of the math doodle app series. With connect sums and sums stacker, you click or drag a consecutive series of connected values that add up to a targeted sum. It is a great app to build number sense. You can vary the degree of difficulty by changing the object from numbers to dice to coins!
Please note: These apps cost $1.99 and $.99.
