Reading
Comprehension
We have been working on Predicting and Connecting to our reading. This helps us to understand the story. When you read with your child at home, ask him/her to predict what will happen next or ask him/her if he/she can connect personally to the character.
Little Red Hen
We read the book and have been practicing our Readers Theater. We performed for our pre-school friends and we can't wait to perform for you on Thursday night.
Reader's Workshop
Please continue to have your child read their leveled book 3 times and return it to school the next day. I'm really impressed how our reading skills are progressing. We have been working on our strategies for how to attack a word we don't know: Eagle Eye, Stretching Snake, Skippy Frog, and Chunky Monkey. Ask your child about these strategies and have him/her use them when they are reading.
Phonics
Letter Name, Sounds, and Writing
We are continuing to practice our letter names and sounds. We are beginning to write the uppercase letters this week. I will send home handwriting sheets periodically to continue mastering our skills.
Writing
Narratives
We are continuing to work on Narratives to master our story elements! Now that our reading and phonics are progressing, we are also beginning to really write words in our stories.
Math
Numbers 11-19
We have begun learning to count, recognize and understand our teen numbers, 11-19. We are trying to understand that a teen number (say 15) is made up of 1 group of 10 and 5 ones. This is challenging for some, but don't worry if your child is struggling. We will continue to work on this throughout the year. It is a hard concept. Below is a picture of the homework your child will be bringing home tomorrow. This is how it should be completed. Some of us are still working on recognizing our numbers. Please help your child with simple flashcards of number 0-20.
Technology
Lois Elhert
We have been reading books by Lois Elhert with Mrs. Love. Next week we will make an animal project with leaves and then do a research study on that animal. Lois Elhert's illustrations in all her books were made of scrapes and her book, Leaf Man, used leaves to illustrate animals.
