From the Cafeteria
The second week of March, 6th-10th is National School Breakfast Week. Research has shown that eating a healthy nutritious breakfast, helps students stay alert and perform better in school. Students reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math. Students have better concentration, and retain more of what they learn. Student’s participation in class is higher. Students maintain a healthy weight and drink more milk and eat more fruit daily. A nutritious breakfast is available at Windsor Oaks from 8:20 am-8:35 am. The regular price for breakfast $1.40, and the reduced breakfast .30. The breakfast menu can be found on the vbschools.com website.
Several students have negative balances. How can we help? Have you filled out a free/reduced application? You may pick up an application from the cafeteria manager or the front office.
Questions or concerns? Contact the Cafeteria Manager, Mekel Stewart 757-648-4129.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been working hard the second quarter. Students have been investigating water. They have practiced retelling stories using beginning, middle and end. In math students have worked on graphing data, decomposing and composing numbers, and ordinal numbers. Students are learning to write sentences using inventive spelling.
In third quarter students will continue to graph data. Students will learn about animals and plants and changes they undergo during their life cycles. Students will continue to practice writing complete sentences using beginning sounds. In reading, students will be focusing on nonfiction reading and finding facts. They will also learn about maps.
First Grade
Our First Graders have had been working hard during the second quarter. They have continued reading and listening to fiction stories and practicing retelling skills summarizing the beginning, middle and end of a story. While reading nonfiction passages they have focused on identifying the main idea. In math, our First Graders have been studying place value, comparing numbers, addition and subtraction, and story problems.
As our new quarter begins, we will be learning that some fiction stories teach a lesson or theme. In math, we will be learning how to interpret and discuss what we learn from graphs. We will learn the value of coins, telling time, and how to read a calendar.
Second grade
We’ve had an exciting second quarter in grade two! In Social Studies, we studied the Powhattan, Plains and Pueblo Native American tribes. In Science, we began learned about weather, and how it impacts people, plants and animals. After researching the weather tools and extreme storms, we created posters highlighting our research. We also got to gather data about a city, write a weather forecast, and record it in front of a green screen, just like a real meteorologist!
Coming up in third quarter, we will begin to study Ancient Egypt in Social Studies, and learn about magnets in Science. In math we have been learning about two digit addition and subtraction, story problems, and estimation. During quarter three, we will begin a unit in measurement, which includes counting money up to $2.00, telling time, and reading the temperature on a thermometer. We will also begin to do two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping! During Quarter two in Reading, we worked on finding the main ideas in both fiction and nonfiction as well as distinguishing between a fact and opinion. Coming up in third quarter, we will be focusing on character traits, identifying the theme as well as the author’s purpose. In writing during second quarter, we continued to work on writing complete sentences, longer stories as well as building skills such as common and proper nouns and homophones. In the upcoming third quarter, we will continue to build our editing and revising skills, and practice writing in a variety of forms.
Third grade
Third grade has had a wonderful second quarter and is looking forward to just an amazing 3rd quarter! Language Arts is rockin’ the reading! During the second quarter, we also solved a problem. We solved where to place red wolf pups. After researching red wolfs, each student decided whether to place the pups in a zoo, wildlife reserve, or release them into the wild. Each student proved their decision based on evidence from the research. We then used our letter writing skills to write a letter to Ranger Chuck Larsen telling him our recommendation where to place the red wolf pups. Congratulations environmental problem solvers! Looking forward to the third quarter. We invite all students and parents to check out the CLEVER application, and try the Achieve challenge at home. Also note the research data base applications. You can research your own interests at home as well students! Keep reading because the more you read the more you grow! In math during quarter two your children completed a unit on measurement that included time, money, and temperature. They also began learning the various models of multiplication as well and understanding that multiplication and division. At the end of quarter two we began our unit of study on geometry to include points, rays, lines, line segments, and angles. We will continue our unit on geometry with geometric solids, congruency, and geometric patterns. Third quarter also brings fun fraction filled learning! Have them keep working hard and completing their nightly review homework!
Fourth grade
Fifth grade
As we move into our third quarter of the school year, here’s a recap of where we are at and where we are going.
In Language Arts we’re continuing our understanding of both fiction and nonfiction structures and concepts. Please continue to have your child read at home every night for at least 15-20 minutes or more and ask them questions about what they are reading and about the text itself. This is the number one thing YOU can do to support their learning. In addition, they can access Achieve 3000 and/or Core Clicks from our WOES homepage which allows your child to read at home on their reading level and further supports comprehension.
In Social Studies we will be completing our study of The American Revolution and the roles of various Virginian’s contributions to the Forming of the New Nation the United States. We will begin our study of the Civil War in Virginia followed swiftly by the Civil Rights Movement and 20th Century Virginia during this quarter. To support Social Studies objectives we will be traveling to Colonial Williamsburg on March 21st and are excited about this adventure. Please look for information about this field trip which was sent home this week.
Science instruction in fifth grade has included the study of Force, Motion and Energy, Matter, and we are finishing up our Unit on Sound next week and will follow it with the units on Light, Classification, and Cells and Organisms. As you know our fifth grade Science SOL test, which will be given in May, includes fourth grade science concepts as well. Please support your child’s success by quizzing them on the fourth grade science concepts which are included in their study packets. If you do not see these routinely please ask your child’s teacher about them.
We have just begun our unit on Measurement in Math and have recently concluded our instruction of Computation and Estimation, as well as Number and Number Sense, and Geometry. We will follow this month long unit with basic Algebra and Probability afterward.
Many resources have been provided for fifth grade success especially study materials for Science (both 4th and 5th grade objectives) and Social Studies. Please help your child to study these valuable materials. Your interest will encourage them to do their best and see the value you place on their school efforts. There are many valuable materials to support fifth grade instruction found at our WOES homepage also, please investigate these with your child. Additionally, SOL practice tests can be found at VDOE under the Standards of Learning tab, and practice science and math SOL questions can be explored using jeffersonlab.org as a resource.
Music
Happy New Year to all!!!!!!! What a beginning to our new year with lots of SNOW. A special thank you again to all the Chorus students, who made our last week before break so special with the Holiday Concerts. That turned out to be a lot of fun for everyone.
We have had our 5th Grade All-City chorus tryouts on Tuesday, Jan. 24th during Chorus time, and I have selected 6 students to participate in all-city chorus in March. The All-city Concert will be held at Sandler Center on Saturday March 25th @ 12:30pm, all are welcome.
Fourth graders are working on the recorder and getting ready to visit the Virginia Symphony on Feb. 15th and have an exciting challenge to play some songs on their recorders along with the Symphony. What an opportunity! Parents, please keep encouraging them in their practice.
As always, if you have any questions concerning your child’s progress in music, please feel free to contact me.

Art Zone
First grade’s focus on learning and practicing the Elements of Art is continuing forward. We are moving on from Color and Line Abstract painting to learning how artists create the illusion of 3D Space. ‘ Peek a Boo Snowman’ paintings will be help us enjoy the rest of our winter. Second grade has just begun a unit focusing on Native American community and will be using clay for the first time this year. Third graders have also started a new unit. They will build on their science knowledge about Color our last unit, and create collages like Henri Matisse, using 3D glasses. Fourth grade continues our study of Optical Illusion Art and will bring home their portfolios with all the examples of Op Art we explore. Finally, Fifth graders have been combining math and art creating poster size Tessalations. I’m looking forward to displaying all this current student art in our hallways as we celebrate ‘Fine Arts Month’ in March.
