BRAVES Book Clubs
What to help out at school? Love reading? Check this out!
MES is looking for volunteers to help with 5th grade student book clubs
At MES, we are invested in building a community of readers! Our 5th graders are busy learning such a variety of subjects that it's sometimes difficult to carve out time to read for pleasure, so we are looking for volunteers to help with small-group book clubs. The goal is simply to read what interests them, have authentic & engaging discussion with their peers, and grow as readers. We need parent and community volunteers to help us with this plan: no teaching experience necessary!
All you need is:
- to love to read
- want to talk with students about what they're reading
- a 30 minute lunch window to be at MES
Training and support will be provided through AIG teacher, Helen Corbett, and Media Coordinator, Mollee Holloman.
If you are interested...
Join us for an informational meeting during "bring your parent to school day" on Wednesday October 1. We will meet in the media center for an overview on how the clubs will be run, and your role in helping our students be better readers!
Some possible topics include...
Author Studies
Great children's literature authors like Roald Dahl, Rick Riordan, Andrew Clements, Beverly Cleary, etc.
Explore a Genre
Using our new genre-system in the library, students would pick books on their level within a specific genre.
Informational Text
Some students love nonfiction, or 'informational text', which could lead to some interesting discussions on topics like space, science, history and more!
"Book clubs are so appealing because children can truly get lost in a book without standardized tests looming, no comprehension questions to answer, just the pure satisfaction of reading for enjoyment. Book groups offer a venue to bring the lone act of reading into a social circle." -Jennifer Thompson
Stress-free volunteering
This is a FUN ACTIVITY that will get you more involved with our school. You will be completely supported by several staff members along the way and any commitment you can make will better the reading lives of our students! Any questions? Please email Mollee Holloman at hollomanmo@daretolearn.org or Helen Corbett at Corbetthe@daretolearn.org . If you cannot make the introductory meeting, contact us and we will arrange a time that works for you.
Interest Forms
Clicking the green icon below will take you to a form to help us collect information on interested volunteers - you are NOT required to fill this out to 'sign up', nor will you be committing to anything if you do. This just helps us get an idea of how many volunteers we have interested in the book club.
