Highly Functioning PLCs
"Most observers credit British researchers Paul Black and Dylan William with kicking off today's worldwide interest in formative assessment. In 1998, Black and William published two important works: an article in the journal Phi Delta kappan and an extensive review of empirical research studies focused on classroom assessment. In their kappan article, Black and William (1998b) argue that formative assessment, properly employed in the classroom, will help students learn what is being taught to a substantially better degree. They support this argument with evidence from their research review (1998a), a meta-analysis in which they conclude that student gains in learning triggered by formative assessment are "amongst the largest ever reported for educational interventions" (Transformative Assessment, Popham, p.61)

Entertaining Self-indulgent Behavior:
Some students desire the spotlight so they seek negative attention, doing something inappropriate to get that attention. You then have two options:
Address the behavior: You respond back but your “authority” may be challenged, resulting in the misbehaving student in the spotlight & other students missing out on vital instructional time.
Ignore the behavior: Push the behavior aside & deal with it when convenient for you. If you are able to teach & the other students can continue to learn , ignoring is the best option. The student will get the hint as he/she will NOT get the desired attention & learn he/she cannot stop instruction from taking place in your classroom.
We are proud to have no Office Discipline Referral data to share with you for the month of August! Off to a great start!
Increasing College Going Culture at Bay Lane
Engaging Parents
- Based on recent feedback at Open House, please make sure IC messages to families include a greeting designating the grade level and/or subject area when communicating with parents. That way, families with multiple children in our building can better navigate IC messages. Thank you!
- Parent teacher conferences are 4.5 hours each night or 9.0 hours total. However, we will list them as 4:00-8:00 pm. This allows you one hour flex time to meet the needs of parents who can't attend on this night. We hope you find this helpful!
- Awesome to see those of you already sending positive contacts home!! Way to go Heath, Kristen T., Chris W., Jodee, Val, Lauren, Kim, Katie S., Leah, Jenny B., Allie T., Nancy D., Kim R., Sarah B., Laura T., Cassie, and Carolyn.
