4th Quarter 2021-22 School Year May 13, 2022
Team Summit
Well, here we are! The end of the year And what an awesome year it has been! Thank you to your wonderful children for providing such a great year! Here is what we have going on for this last full week of school.
In Social Studies classes we will continue to examine the Civil War.
In Science classes, we are focusing on plant biology and will have a flower dissection on Wednesday.
In Language Arts, we watched the poetry slam documentary, Louder Than A Bomb, and are now writing a prompt about the poets and themes featured in the movie.
In Advanced Language Arts, we have finished reading "The Diary of Anne Frank" play as a class. The performances were outstanding and the message of the play is still strong and resonant.
On May 13th we are starting our time capsule project in all classes. Students will write letters to themselves about various topics and, in turn, I will keep them safe and return them to the kids when they're seniors. Please make sure your student brings a manila envelope to school for this project. In our last week in Wellness we will have our final assessment on our Sexual Health Unit, and lots of time outside! Yeah, warm weather!
Please look for an email from Mrs. Superka detailing the last day of school. She will send this email out no later than Monday, May 23.
Team Navigators
In language arts this week, students concluded their summative writing assessment by engaging in a comprehensive writer’s workshop for The Outsiders Essay.
In science this week we prepared for and completed the exciting, fun and educationaal frog dissection. Students were outstanding at this!
Wellness classes are learning about factors that influence their eating behaviors as well as learning about, and navigating the MYplate.gov website. We continue to get outside for exercise and sunshine and are still battling the winds as we try to play some ultimate frisbee.
In social studies we are studying China by exploring some key events in China's history. As a reminder when students are absent, they should check my Google Classroom to see what they missed. In most cases, students can complete the work while at home using the linked resources.
Team Explorers
In Language Arts this week we took a step back and reviewed the year, including competing in the Schwartz Olympics. We also watched a film adaptation of The Outsiders. Outsiders Day was an awesome success - we had SO much fun! The school was decorated, we had 60s music in the halls, and in my class finished watching the film at the 'drive in' movie theater. All late work should be in by now.
In Science we wrapped up our Adaptations and Natural Selection activity about Finches by looking at the data collected and interpreting what it tells us. We predicted what future generations of finches would look like. We also began our preparation for the Frog Dissection. On Friday we celebrated Outsiders Day by going to see some cool cars from the 60s that some awesome volunteers brought in and worked on our final /study guide. Last day for late work is Wednesday, 5/18.
In Social Studies this week we researched for our Asia Inquiry Project. It is always fun to see kids researching something they are really curious about. On their block day, students also took their Asia Unit Test. On Friday, it was back to the 1960s with Outsiders Day! Students learned about Duck and Cover Drills and explored how the music of the 60s reflected some of the big changes and troubles of that decade. Last day for late work is Tuesday, 5/17.
In Wellness this week we continued our exploration of our nutrition unit. We discussed the importance of a balanced diet by looking at the MyPlate website and started our discussion on food labels. For the PE portion of class, we played some kickball - the wind keeps foiling our plans for ultimate frisbee! On Friday we had tons of fun at the Outsiders Day Sock Hop.
CMS Technology Updates
Starting on Monday, May 16th, we will begin the process of collecting Cresthill-owned devices (primarily Chromebooks) and charging blocks/cords from any student who has borrowed from the school. If students are not able to return any devices or supporting peripherals (e.g., charging cords) they have borrowed, a charge will be placed on the student's account. Please be sure to have your student have their device on 5/16 and return, in good shape, everything they borrowed from Cresthill.
Looking ahead to the 2022-23 school year: For our current 7th graders and future Cresthill students, please complete this Google Form regarding your technology plans (1:1 device) for your student for the upcoming year at Cresthill. This information will help us in our planning for our 1:1 Student Device Program here at cresthill. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Wakefield (mdwakefield@dcsdk12.org). Thank you!
