Jefferson Dancers at the National High School Dance Festival

Big picture

Two members of the Jefferson Dancers won awards in the Outstanding Student Choreography Showcase at the National High School Dance Festival held March 1-5, 2023, at Point Park University in Pittsburgh. Senior John Kearney won the highest honor, first place for Outstanding Student Choreography, for his piece entitled, "You'll Be Happy." Fellow senior Eli Bryan was Honorable Mention and took third place for Outstanding Student Choreography for their piece "Altitude Sickness."

The decision to crown "You'll Be Happy," the winner was unanimous among the seven judges, including dance professors at top universities and dance professionals.

According to Dr. Kathryn Kearns, founder and executive director of the National High School Dance Festival, there have never been two pieces selected from the same school to perform in this showcase. Nor have top honors been achieved for more than one piece from the same school in one year.

The National High School Dance Festival is the largest in the United States, showcasing excellence in high school dance programming since 1992. The festival included four days of student performances, master classes, and auditions for college and summer-intensive scholarships. The Jefferson Dancers performed in the two Gala concerts and the Outstanding Student Choreography Showcase. Nearly 10 of the 18 Jefferson Dancers received numerous summer-intensive and college scholarships at the festival.

Volunteer Opportunity March 22

Greetings Demo Families!

We need your help! This is a great opportunity to support our students at Jefferson.

On March 22nd, our Juniors will be taking the SAT and our Sophomores have the opportunity to take the Pre-ACT. We would like to take our 9th grade and non-testing 10th grade students on a field trip to the Zoo from 9am-2:00pm. To do this, we need between 10-15 volunteers to chaperone alongside our staff. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with students in a FUN way.

You must have a valid background check on file. These are valid for 3 years. The application can be found here: volunteer.pps.net

If you are curious if your background check is still valid, please contact jgreensted@pps.net

Please confirm your interest by March 10th by emailing klove@pps.net

Your help is necessary in making sure this trip happens!

Thanks for considering!

March 22: SATs, PreACTs, Seniors at PSU, and Zoo Field Trip

Families of Junior Demos--On March 22, Jefferson will be giving the SAT to all juniors. Scores on the SAT can provide strong evidence of college-readiness in the college admissions process. PPS is paying the cost of this school-day test for all juniors. Students do not need to opt-in to this test. All juniors will test in the AUX (small gym) for the duration of their school day. Once they have completed the testing they will be dismissed for the day.

Families of Sophomore Demos--The Oregon Department of Education recently announced a requirement for school districts to offer the PreACT to all 10th graders for the 2022-2023 school year. While PPS 10th graders participated in the PSAT last October, we are required to provide an opportunity for all 10th graders to participate with the PreACT this Spring. The PreACT assessment predicts student performance on the ACT test and offers career-interest information to your students to make informed decisions and plan for the future. Jefferson will be offering the PreACT on March 22 at no cost to you. Your sophomore must opt-in to take the PreACT by March 10, 2023. Opt-in forms will be distributed and returned to Chemistry teachers.

Freshman and Non-Testing Sophomores will be participating in a field trip on March 22. Seniors will be attending a field trip to Portland State University on that same day.

TOMORROW!! Saturday School

Does your student have an outstanding credit contract? Jefferson teachers will support students tomorrow from 9-12pm. Please have your student come to the Kerby St entrance. Snacks provided! Please contact jcausey@pps.net to sign your student up or to get more information.

Jefferson Poetry Slam is Wednesday, April 5th from 3:00-4:30 in the library. All students are welcome to perform their original poetry. See Ms. Morlock in the library for more information.

Chromebooks

Do you see a chromebook with a pink "Loaner" sticker on it at your house? Has your student told you their chromebook is locked? Do you see extra PPS chromebooks in your house that do not match the number of students that live with you?

Please remind students to return those to the office! We will make sure they have the appropriate book assigned as well as replenish our daily loaner box.

Head/Face Coverings

We continue to see students wearing inappropriate head/face covering while in school. This makes it hard to identify students in our school, which is a safety issue. Please make sure to go over the proper head/face attire with your student(s).

Students seen in violation will be asked to immediately remedy the situation or asked to leave for the day. Please review the following pictures below
