Dear Hopkins' Families,
As Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." This week, Hopkins School is celebrating this truth with our 3rd Annual Random Acts of Kindness Week! We encourage all our families to join in the spirit of giving with us! Once again, I've shared a variety of videos and articles in the SEL resources section below, so please check them out.
Our Principal's Cabinet for Kindness and HAWK Squad have been busy preparing around Hopkins and we look forward to celebrating in a variety of ways, both in the classrooms and around the building. We have a poster outside the cafeteria where we hope to see a "confetti" of sticky notes describing students and staff's acts of kindness in coming weeks! The Principal's Cabinet has designed a week of activities and spirit days - we hope students and staff will join in our celebration and CHOOSE TO BE KIND! Below, you will see our description of the various themes of the week. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are special "Spirit Wear" days.
One important aspect of kindness is the idea of "paying it forward." One way we hope to do this at Hopkins is by promoting service learning projects. Students from Principal's Cabinet and HAWK Squad both take the lead for these efforts throughout the year by organizing various drives and fundraisers to impact Hopkins, Hopkinton and beyond! This week, students are encouraged to bring their choice of 1) canned food items for Project Just Because or 2) coins to donate towards our fundraiser to support the koalas impacted by the wildfires of Australia (our Principal's Cabinet for Responsibility are choosing the charity!).
This Tuesday, students who bring in one of the above donations will be able to choose "Caring Compliments Cards" to decorate in our cafeteria for others at Hopkins School. Our Principal's Cabinet members will be organizing the events during lunch, so please encourage your child to participate by either bringing in a small monetary donation or an item from PJB's wish list (see below). Students will then have the opportunity to write notes to classmates, as well as teachers and staff! Principal's Cabinet will then distribute these notes throughout the day on Friday.
In this hectic, fast-paced world that we all live in, let's take this week to focus on kindness with our children. In the wise words of the Charlie Chaplin, "We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness."

Our school website has static information, but it is also updated with current news, photos and bulletins. Every other week, you can expect a school-wide update from the Principal’s Office, the Hawk Squawk. This is distributed to families via email and can also be found on the school’s webpage. You can also follow us on Twitter: @hopkinsschool, Instagram (hopkins_elementary), and Facebook (HopkinsElementarySchool). Ms. Babson sends out the Hopkins Herald newsletter every other month. This includes articles written by staff and students at Hopkins, as well as many pictures from our hallways.
In addition to the above school-wide methods, please communicate openly with your child’s teacher(s). Each teacher has an email address and voice mailbox. Many also utilize Google Classroom, a website and/or Twitter to share news. You can find their contact information on our school website or you can call (508)-497-9824 to reach teachers’ voicemail.
