SOAR Updates

Thank you for your support in getting everyone off campus safely!

Thank you to everyone for ensuring we safely got everyone off campus when AVC announced they would close the campus due to high winds. Campus closures happen periodically, so thank you for your patience and flexibility!

Be a STAR!

STUDENTS, don't forget to Be a STAR no matter where you are -- that's in the classroom, on campus, connected online, or in the community -- again, we're promoting Self advocating, Teachable, Accountable, and Respectful leaders -- STARs -- here at SOAR!

PSAT/Student Activity Day

Students in 10th and 11th grade will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 13th. This is also a Student Activity Day where all students will attend school from 7:50am to 12:30pm. Lunch will be served from 12:30 - 1:20pm as usual. All students will need to be picked up by 1:30pm unless they have a college class that afternoon.

TESTERS (10th and 11th graders) -- Please make sure that you are at school and in your testing locations by 7:45am. Also, look for a personalized email on Tuesday outlining your testing location for the PSAT. You should plan to eat a good breakfast that morning and bring two #2 pencils along with a calculator with you as well.

Non-testers (9th and 12 graders) - Please make sure to sign in at the tables in front of SOAR between 7:45 and 8am on Wednesday morning. The options for students who are not taking the PSAT are as follows:

  • North Athletic Field - Sports
  • AVC Boardroom - Movies
  • AVC Student Lounge - Board/Electronic Games
  • Yoshida Hall 202 Lab - Study Hall
  • Mesquite Hall 323 Lab - College Applications/Financial Aid (Seniors Only)
  • AVC Cafeteria - College Applications/Financial Aid (Seniors Only)

Students will have the option to pick their locations during the following timeframes; space will be limited in some locations:

  • Round 1 - 8:00am - 9:25am
  • Round 2 - 9:30am - 10:55am
  • Round 3 - 11:00am - 12:30pm

Once a student makes it to their location, they will need to fill out a form indicating their location. The Google form will be emailed out to you on Wednesday morning, so please make sure to look for that message in your AVUHSD Gmail account. A staff member will remind you of this at each location.

Again, once students are finished testing or have wrapped up their activities at 12:30pm, they are free to leave campus. If you have any questions, please talk with your teachers on Tuesday (10/12) or stop by the office for more details.

Coffee with the STARs!

Our first Coffee with the STARs for this school year will take place this Friday, October 15th from 7:30am to 8:30am. All are invited; any non-students must check in through the office and we'll direct you to the location on campus.

This is a time to mingle with SOAR staff and learn more about the SOAR program. We look forward to seeing you there!

Food Services to Provide Universal Feeding in 2021-22

Food Services is pleased to announce that beginning in 2021-22, your student will receive meals at no charge as part of their school day thanks to the USDA's COVID Relief Plan. This is an automatic benefit for all enrolled students throughout CA. It is important that our students are nourished in order for them to learn and not have the pressure associated with program eligibility.

These changes mean students are not required to complete a meal application or provide any specific documentation, however, the AVUHSD is still required to gather family income and demographic information to ensure that your student benefits from additional state and federal programs that are available.

The CDE uses this confidential information to identify qualifications for additional funding that provides for many programs and opportunities for our students. Based on the information provided, eligible students may receive fee waivers for the PSAT or SAT, free college applications, and much more. The AVUHSD is eligible for additional Supplemental and Targeted funding for student programs and services based on a variety of factors, including this data.

Please help us provide the best opportunities that we can for our students by taking a few minutes to fill out this form:

Visit the Food Services website at for more information or to contact them with any questions regarding the above link.

Students are always welcome to come to campus for breakfast (7:15-7:45am) and lunch (12:30- 1:20pm). Remember, there is no cost for meals this year. All meals are served out of the "Lunch Box" between the office and S-1.

Student Handbook

We ask that students and families please review our student handbook:

It's important that all members of the SOAR community are familiar with behavioral expectation, academic integrity policies, dress code, etc. Students will be getting a copy of the planner through AVID classes soon. Again, until then, we ask that you review our online version of this document.

Senior Portraits

If you have not taken your senior portraits, please do so as the deadline to get them done to be included in the yearbook is quickly approaching. We are asking seniors to get their portraits done by the end of September/early December. You can go to O'Connor or William Edwards. Students may pick their own outfits, pick backgrounds, and the studios will do the rest. Have questions? Email Mrs. Jefferson at

SOAR Self-screening Procedures

Students will no longer need to register or submit a daily screening through the STOPIt Survey for high school campus entry. They will, however, need to do a self-screening daily prior to coming to campus; this is in line with the AVUHSD. Again, there is nothing that students will need to submit or show for entry onto the high school campus. The self-screening questions include the following:

  • Have you been in close physical contact in the last 14 days with anyone known to have COVID-19 or anyone who has any symptoms of COVID-19?

  • Are you currently quarantined because you may have been exposed to a person with COVID-19?

  • Has anyone in your household recently tested positive for COVID-19?

  • Are you currently awaiting test results for a COVID-19 test?

  • Are you currently experiencing any of the following symptoms:

    • Fever at or above 100.4 degrees

    • Chills, sweating and/or repeated shaking or shivering

    • Cough

    • Sore throat

    • Mild or moderate difficulty breathing/shortness of breath for unknown reasons

    • Muscle aches or body aches

    • Vomiting or diarrhea

    • Loss of taste or smell

    • Runny or congested nose

    • Headache

    • Feeling unusually tired or weak

If you answered yes to any of these questions, DO NOT report to school. Stay home and email to report the absence.

Expectations for Staying on Campus

All SOAR students are expected to stay on campus from the start of their first high school class until the end of their last high school class. If families would like to pick students up early or between classes, they must come into the office to do so. Parents/Guardians or emergency contacts must have an ID to present to the office.

We ask that you please have a conversation with your son/daughter about this topic, especially if they drive themselves to campus. Again, all students must be checked out through the office and may not leave campus between high school classes. If you have any questions, please contact the front office.

Grade-level Google Classrooms

Please be aware that students should be checking their Grade-level Google Classroom regularly. There will be important school and counseling information posted there often. This week, students will find AVC textbook information as well as a list of computer labs, with hours and locations, on AVC's campus.

New Document Delivery Option in PowerSchool

The Antelope Valley Union High School District has added a document delivery feature to PowerSchool. This will enable SOAR High School to send report cards via email. In order for this feature to work, parents will need to log into their PowerSchool account and "Opt-In" for document delivery.
