Secondary Storage
A Flyer Showing Different Types Of Secondary Storage
Secondary Storage
Secondary Storage devices cannot be access by the CPU directly. This is not like the internal hard drive which is constantly available.
Magnetic Storage
Internal Hard Disk, Portable Hard Disk and Magnetic Tape. Secondary Storage devices are hardware that is used to store the programs and data that the computer can access. Unlike RAM the contents of Secondary Storage will not be lost when power to the computer system is turned off. Its Vary's in speed. they can hold up to 1TB. They last for upto 15+ years.(which is proberbly longer then you computer will) they are very reliable if they are not damage. They can be used to do many thing but it all depends on what type of magnetic storage you get.
Flash Storage
USB,Memory Card and Internal Flash Storage. Flash / Solid State Storage is Storage that has not moving parts and is totaly electrical which means it's less likely. It varys in speed but is much faster then magnetic storage because it has no moving parts. It can carry upto 120GB. they are very durable but if damaged then they will tend to brake. they are very reliable but some of them like a usb will corrupt files.
Optical Storage
CD and DvD. These types of storage use lazers and lazer detector to read the disk. There are little holes in the disk that the lazer doesn't reflect off unlike is there wasn't a hole there then the lazer would reflect off hitting the lazer detector. These types of storage are very cheap and are quite slow. Slower then the magnetic hard disk which is slow! They can hold up to 17GB's of infomation on them. They are very portable. They can last very long is you take care of them they are also very reliable.
