Notes from the AMEA President

The new school year is off and running! I hope things are going well for you so far! Are you looking for a way to get more involved with music education in Arizona? We are looking for three motivated people to serve as Ex-Officio chairs on the AMEA board. The first position is for Advocacy. We are looking for someone who can help organize statewide advocacy events for our membership. The second position is for Innovations. This position represents areas of music education that are not your traditional band, orchestra, choir, and general music. We need someone creative in this position. Finally, we are hoping to find a Retired Persons chair, who can help us organize and mobilize our retired AMEA members. All three of these positions would provide a valuable service to our members and be very rewarding! If you are interested in any of the positions, please contact me.

Important Info for Judges of AMEA Events

To judge at AMEA events, potential judges must fill out our Google form to register with AMEA every year. This must be done prior to the start of the event you are planning to judge. The chairperson or AMEA Region Governor will be required to verify that judges are on the list in addition to submitting the required paperwork before a judge can be paid. Here are the easy-to-use links. Please fill out the form today and encourage your fellow music teachers to register for the opportunity to judge as well!

Arizona Seal of Arts Proficiency

Coming soon! The State Seal of Arts Proficiency was signed into law by Governor Doug Ducey on May 14, 2019. SB1111 had bipartisan support and was a grassroots effort from Arizona Education Advocates from across the state. Senator Paul Boyer served as the bill's sponsor. It recognizes Arizona graduates who put a significant amount of time and develop high skills in an arts pathway, such as music. Districts must apply to ADE to be able to award the seal. More information will be available in the coming months.

ESSA Information for Music Educators

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) took the place of No Child Left Behind several years ago. It specifically enumerates music as part of a well-rounded education. Along with ESSA comes Title IV-A funding. Here are two helpful links with more information. Contributed by Haley Honeman.
