COVID Protocol Update - September 7, 2021
CHANGES TO FACE COVERING PROTOCOLS AND CLOSE CONTACT QUARANTINE PROCEDURES
During their September 7, 2021 meeting, the OCS Board of Education voted 6-1 to make the following changes to the OCS COVID-19 Protocols and Practices:
Face Coverings Required
Effective Thursday, September 9, with full implementation by Monday, September 13, face coverings will be required for all staff, all students, and all visitors when indoors on all OCS school campuses. The Superintendent and his staff have been directed to establish criteria for exemptions to this requirement based upon factors including, but not limited to, physical, emotional, or developmental disabilities. These exemptions shall be published on September 8, 2021. The face covering requirement will be reconsidered by the Board as required by General Statute.
The decision requiring face coverings comes in an effort to maintain in-person instruction as the number of students excluded from school due to close contact quarantines has increased.
With some exceptions for extracurricular and athletic settings, according to both the NC StrongSchools Toolkit and current board-approved OCS protocols, students identified as close contacts do not have to quarantine if, during the exposure, both individuals were appropriately masked.
Close Contact Quarantine Time Adjustment
Quarantine time for individuals identified as close contacts has been amended to a minimum of 10 days symptom-free without COVID-19 testing. Individuals identified as close contacts may return to school following this period of quarantine provided no symptoms have been reported during that time.
Removing the testing requirement will standardize the quarantine period for close contacts and help ease the burden on our local medical community.
Leader In Me - Habit 1- Be Proactive!
Be Proactive means to take responsibility for your choices and behaviors. Habit 1 is the key to all of the other habits; that’s why it comes first. Be Proactive says, “I am in charge of my own life. I am responsible for whether I am happy or sad. I can choose how I react to other people or situations. I am in the driver’s seat.”
Young children can easily learn to understand that different choices yield different results. The goal is to teach them to think about those results before they decide what to do. Discussions can focus on taking care of themselves, taking care of their things, reacting or not reacting to others’ behavior, planning ahead, and thinking about what the right thing to do is. With your child, think of ways to Be Proactive at home.
