Introduction
In life many people have different feelings to the same event, or object. Some people have a humorous feeling to Hurricanes like in "Problems with Hurricanes" while others have more fear to it. People have many mixed feelings to the ocean Leslie Silko has a positive attitude. It takes up too much space for where we can put more buildings, others respect it and it's mysterious backgrounds.
Tone and Word Choice
In the poem "Problem with Hurricanes" by Victor Hernandez Cruz his tone to hurricanes is humorous yet at the same time serious. He shows it with line 9-13 with "How would your family feel if they had to tell the generations that you got killed by a flying banana." In "Prayer to the Pacific " by Leslie Marmon Silko she has more of a respectful tone and she likes to talk to it like the ocean is a human being. 12-15 she talks to the ocean with lots of respect.
Figurative Language
In "Problems with Hurricanes" He has a metaphor about the dangers of flying fruit . Then in "Prayer to the Pacific" she has a personification of line 10, 12-16 she has the ocean as a human and talks to it. Silko also adds a simile of line 5 "Big as the myth of Origin." In that line she is talking about the Ocean and where it comes from many different religious beliefs have different theories of how the ocean began. "Prayer to the Pacific" has another personification in line 31-33 with "Wet earth on my feet swallowing raindrops clear from China."
Form and Structure
There are many different forms and structure in the poems "Problems with Hurricanes" and "Prayer to the Pacific". In "Problems with Hurricanes" It is a free verse poem, with no rhyming, in patterns in stanzas, and one word lines in line 13, and 19. It also has lots of repetition in 29-31 with the starting words "Don't worry about the ______." In "Prayer to the Pacific" the words from a side angle look like waves, there are random line spaces in line 8, 20, 22,and 25. Like the poem "Prayer to the Pacific" it is a free verse poem and has little identification of there the stanza breaks are.
Conclusion
With the breaking down of these two poems we see that these two poems have different attitudes to natures ways. One poem had a humorous way to hurricanes. The other had a respectful tone to the ocean and that we have to protect it. The authors style gives as a reason to like the poem. The poem "Prayer to the Pacific" it has more wavy look and spaces to give a slower feeling a more of a prayer feeling.
