Sixth Grade Newsletter
January 28, 2018
Dear Parents,
Miss Frank sent home this year's Reading Month challenges on Friday. There is a BINGO board of activities and a special skiing offer from Nubs Nob.
English
During English on Monday, Mrs. Pott's class will be Skyping with Sean Fay Wolfe, one of the authors of the Minecraft series. Other interested students will be able to attend as well.
The NWEA reading test will now be Wednesday morning. Please make sure students come to school with fully charged iPads.
This week we will be learning about adding logos (logic), pathos (emotion), and ethos (credibility) to our arguments. All the students have chosen topics, written claim statements, and determined an audience for their writing.
As always, students are expected to read outside of class and write about their reading each day. We will also continue our word work studying Greek and Latin roots, and learn about grammar and punctuation through the use of mentor sentences.
Math
Last week, students worked on changing fractions and decimals to percents. They also learned how to find the percent of a number. Finally, students took the NWEA Math Assessment. Due to last Tuesday’s “Ice” day, students were unable to work on the percent story problems (lesson 5.5). However, they did have two assignments: page 285(2-14)/page 286(1-6) & page 293(2-10)/page 294(1-6).
This week we will be finishing Chapter 5. Students will be working on strategies to solve story problems involving percents. They will also learn how to find the whole number given a percent and a part (For example: 12 is 25% of what number?). At the end of the week, students will review for the Chapter 5 test. The test is scheduled for February 5th/6th.
