Conditional Formatting

Conditional Formatting allows users to easily visualize patterns and trends within a worksheet. Some worksheets might contain hundreds or thousands of rows and/or columns of data. If you wanted to quickly see which sales person made their monthly goals or how much money is being paid out for expenses per department, you can use the conditional formatting tool. See the video below for an example of how to use the tool.

Pivot Tables

What is a pivot table? This is an Excel tool that allows users to "summarize and explore data interactively". Some people may think that building a pivot table is complex, however, the pivot table tool makes it quick and easy to build in less than a minute!


After viewing the two videos on pivot tables, can you think of a time or reason that you might use this tool?


Can you think of any reasons why you might want to group numeric data into ranges? This can be done using the Pivot Table tool.


Can you think of a situation where you would want a count of the information contained within the text fields? By default, a pivot table will count any text field. Why might this be helpful?
